I understand the use of letter and numbers to name cars and trucks. I've owned a 310, a 200sx, and even a 128 !!1
I also understand the XL, XLT and Lariat .
Does anyone know why the upper trim level is named Lariat (and not XLZm or XLY,).?
Lariat seems to me, to come out of left field...

Think its a play on Lariat being a Lasso and used on the highest trims of Broncos to tame them. as well as the F-series starting in 78 with the gen 2 Bronco

Been used for a while on mid-upper trim levels. Not totally related but I sure do love those baseball mitt leather seats in the king ranch! ⚾

ok, WHY (or how) does Lariat denote Money/style/Class/Poshness ???
Why switch genres ? XL, XLT, Horsey ???
Was Bridle taken ?
Or Stirrup ?
maybe they should've gone with the XXX , as in tRIPLE x RANCH..

At this point, "Lariat" has been around long enough that the branding is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ford sold over 700,000 F-150s last year. You can try to step back and apply logic to their naming convention, but they basically have defined Lariat as they saw fit and then carpet-bombed the whole market with their definition by way of trucks on the road.

What is harder for me to understand are things like "Limited" and "Platinum" because they aren't obviously "above" or "below" anything else. I mean, I can think of metals far more valuable than platinum, and there is nothing "limited" about an F-150 in any sense of the word. 🤷‍♂️

In naming the Maverick pickup, I didn't understand why Ford used the name of a 1970s car that didn't really have a great reputation. But, the name has grown on me.

In 2019, the Ranger name was brought back to use in the US. This new pickup was based on the similar Ranger pickups being sold in other countries. Personally, I would have used the "F-100 Ranger" name. This name was used to designate a distinct package (like today's Lariat name), for F-100s back in the 60s.

I would have named the current Maverick, the "F-1." This was the original F series truck in 1953, I believe. Another option would be the "F-1 Maverick" The original F-1 pickups were not very large trucks (like the Maverick), when compared to today's F series pickups.

These are just my crazy opinions.

I like the idea of an F-1 maverick for the name

Ford first introduced the "Lariat" name as a trim level, back in 1978.
They would have two "Lariat" options = The Luxury Lariat & the Ranger Lariat.
