Does anyone know if the Mavericks have an Event Data Recorder? I read a while back all new vehicles had to have them with new regulation laws.

Allstate asked me if I wanted a discount that could result in a lower rate if they install a monitor that tracked my driving habits. I declined.

Edit: Maybe that is not the same as an event data recorder???

I conclude the Mav as-built does not have anything but satellite based location and you must use the navigation app or the FordPass app for that to be active. The driving habit monitor is not present.

If had agreed to the driving habit monitor, the info would be transmitted via satellite based location.

Yes it does. Vehicles have been equipped with a data recorder for a very long time. Its part of the system that controls SRS. Started out as a diagnostic tool for manufactures and progressed from there. Some people call it a "black box" but that is not the proper name for it. Back when I trained on it we called it a Crash Data Recorder. I've been away from using it for over 10 years so I am sure a lot has changed.

Yes.

I know at least the 2022 models have it.

The Crash Data Recorder (Software and Hardware), or Event Data Recorder, for Ford is made by Bosch.

The latest list I found from Bosch shows the 2022 model.

Likely on all models, but I could not get a newer list (attached).

When I used to be an Insurance Claims Adjuster, sometimes we would have to order an analysis of a vehicles Crash/Event data recorder to help determine exactly what happened.

From the Internet, so it MUST be true:

First introduced by General Motors in basic form on air-bag-equipped models in the mid-1970s, EDRs were being used by various manufacturers in 64 percent of all new models by the 2005 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It is located in center console just under shift knob area . Srm safety restraint module . Some places claim to be able to reset and restore these . Doesn’t work in the maverick . After an event ( crash with seatbelt or airbag deploy)the maverick has to be replaced to clear airbag light .fault reads crash data or event monitor full .
Cost approx. $430

Most vehicles since the 90's with airbags have them.

Bosch purchased the technology and rights/license from the original developer Delphi Technologies. Bosch required their own training after the acquisition through Collision Safety Institute so I had to attend the course again in 2009. The CDR was under the front seat and recorded numerous control modules (CM's) located throughout the vehicle prior to and at the time of an event.

That depends on the type of data recorder you're looking for.

There are number of different "recorder" in today's vehicles. The earliest being the Crash/Event Data Recorder (C/EDR), introduced a short while after the airbags gained some ground. This record does not have much privacy risk.

The other data recorder is the infotainment system, developed by Berla in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security. The original intent had been to track terrorists, but it went sideways in a hurry since there's no regulation as to who can access the collected data. As such, it has become a privacy risk for vehicle owners since circa 2013. Most, if not all car makers sell this data, everything or just a subset of the data, to insurance companies and other entities interested in it. Once the infotainment system captures this data, it is nearly impossible to erase. That's probably a requirement by DHS, they did not want to have the end users delete this data.

This really has been known even by layers, their USLAW magazine wrote about the risk of the infotainment system collected data back in 2015:

https://berla.co/berla-in-uslaw-magazine/

The Driver Privacy Act of 2015, signed into law by President Obama missed the intended purpose. The Act limited to only C/EDRs recorded events “just prior to a crash event or during a crash event.” As such, to my knowledge the infotainment system recorded data is not regulated as of yet.

Digging thru the Forscan settings I noticed a ton of telemetry stuff that can be enabled/disabled in the TCU -- the Telematic Control Unit. Name says it all. This includes a bunch of stuff specifically tagged as "government".
So in addition to a crash data recorder, your every breath and nose twitch is being uploaded to the cloud for analysis.

@whitef posted this a while back.......

I've done quite a lot of work on this in my security research role and have issued the following guidance for our fleet of corporate owned Ford vehicles.

  • Ford engages in invasive tracking of customer vehicles via the on-board telematics and via the "FordPass" mobile applications.
  • Ford's Terms of Service and Privacy policy are end-user hostile and unacceptable..
  • Do not accept the Terms of Service or Privacy Policy presented by Ford Motor Company.
  • Do not install any Ford sourced mobile applications on company owned devices. We strongly discourage the use of Ford mobile applications on personal devices.
My testing showed that disabling the "convenience" features in the car menu DID NOT stop the cellular radio from being active. I believe that Ford still tracks the vehicle but does not make the data visible to the end user or the dealerships.

On a Maverick, you can pull fuse 11 from the fuse panel under the glovebox. This powers off the 'telematics control module' and stops the tracking. Additionally, if you have the dash apart you can unplug the TCM completely, It is a free standing module with no co-dependencies. Somewhere in Ford land, there is a group of engineers that understand the pure evil of this these tracking / monetization policies and intentionally made it easy to disable the TCM. Kudos to them for doing the right thing.

Undoing that will cause. you to not be able to start your car with your phone, see your tire pressures and a handful of other useless 'features' that Ford offers as compensation for monetizing your life. You dealer won't receive your mileage to bug you about the oil changes that you've already done.

A few other notes.

  • If you're interested in what some of the dealer sees from the TCU, you can go to motorcraftservice.com and purchase a 72 hour subscription to the tech info (super useful if you need wiring diagrams, etc). From there you can view non-sensitive telematic data. No location or anything. FoMoCo keeps the juicy stuff for themselves and the 'marketing partners.'
  • Many of you will come back with the argument of "I have nothing to hide,' or 'you're carrying a phone that tracks you anyway.' Both of these responses make you sound foolish. Here's where we're headed, largely based on every auto maker's own forward looking statements to investors:
    • First, how about behavior tracking / curation based on location. Are you ready to have a pop up on your car screen that says "Hello Mr. Smith. We've noticed that you visit the liquor store regularly and have notified your health insurer.?" How about "Mr Smith, you seem to be at the adult theater, we've notified your wife's council?"
    • Then, driving habits. Ford's current software has a soon to be enabled feature that can send your driving behavior straight to your insurance company. Brake late...miss a stop sign, go to fast when passing? That now costs money.
    • As for your mobile computer that happens to occasionally make / receive calls, you are probably correct. It's probably doing quite a lot of tracking. All of this tracking, apart from cell tower triangulation, is completely avoidable by the owner of the device. Or put another way, entered into voluntarily and consented to by you. It doesn't have to be this way.
Sorry for the long post, but I hate to see everyone just give in to invasive tracking. It's going to end badly, and is preventable.
