Hi All

Just realizing that the owners manual on the ford website calls for "Synthetic Blend" for the 2.5L and the manual from the FordPass app says "Full Synthetic"

I am currently fighting with the dealership service department about this because they are telling me my "premium maintenance " plan will not cover full synthetic because its not specified in the owners manual.

Any thoughts? Anyone Else dealt with this?

Both versions recommend specification # WSS-M2C962-A1 which corresponds to Motorcraft 0W-20 Full Synthetic. There's always the chance that they tried to switch it from full synthetic to synthetic blend but forgot the spec #, though if I had to guess, it's the "blend" wording that's in error.

Does your dealer even carry a synthetic blend in 0W-20?

I do think that it is an error in the owner's manual. 0W20 is likely going to be full synthetic?
If they sold you a maintenance plan that doesn't cover full synthetic, that could be an issue (but there may be some exception before 0W20 is only available full synthetic???)

It is not an issue I have dealt with before. Either the plan should accept 0w20 because that is the only option. OR, the dealership sold you the wrong plan. Maybe you have upgrade the plan? Or have dealership pay the difference?

(Or maybe they'll do it but ask you to pay the difference.....but that would really only make sense if you bought a regular plan (where synthetic blend and then insisted on full synthetic)

If you intend to keep your vehicle for any period of time, it's best to use full synthetic motor oil for all engines. The "blend" oil intoduce the same problem is conventional oil of burn off. This is when the lighter oils evaporate leaving the heavier oils in the crank case. Conventional, otherwise known as organic oils can't perform as well as the harmonic molecules make up of the synthetic.

Ford does not make 0w-20 synthetic blend, just full syn. Odds are they do not carry it in bulk, so they charge per bottle which is more expensive than bulk.

Actually you are wrong.

Ford makes a 0w20 specifically for hybrid engines and it is a 0w20 blend. My dealer has always gone in back and gotten six quarts of the stuff for my C-Max instead of using the bulk, as it is what is specked for the car. When I was looking at oil specs for the Maverick I noticed the above same thing, and I would know the older spec WSS-M2C947-B1 is the blend.

So the dealers carry this? How much per quart? This is the correct oil for the 2.5 hybrid maverick engine?

0W-20 that's not full synthetic is probably not lasting anywhere close to 10000 miles. That's a very thin oil.

Sorry, your info is old and incorrect. A couple years ago Ford stopped making semi-syn 0w20 and only makes full syn 0w20. If you are buying semi-syn, then it is New Old Stock.

List is $9.29/QT

And it is available from Motorcraft oil distributors in bulk oil at a reduced price.

So I believe the blend suggestion is for older 2.5L hybrids like my 2015 Fusion and 2017 C-Max. Those manuals recommended WWS-MC947-B1 spec oil. This matches the 0w20 blend as well as the rev 6/18 synthetic bottle and is SN/SN+ GF-5.

The 11/19 rev bottle states WSS-M2C962-A1 and meets API SP and GF-6. WSS-M2C962-A1 of course supersedes the older spec so it's fine in the older engine's but I don't know about warranty if you put 947-B1 in the newer 2.5L engine that is asking for 962-A1.

My C-Max is out of warranty now so it does not go to the dealership for service, though that may change for the next service. I don't know if they still stock the blend or not but I would not be using it in the Maverick 2.5L engine.

Personally I used Pensoil Black Label Synthetic as it was available at Walmart and meets WSS-M2C962-A1

3/2/20 Ford announced the change, as I said before, Ford only offers 0w20 in full synthetic which is used in hybrid engines.

This blend doesn't meet WSS-M2C962-A1 specification.
