I had a conversation with the service advisor when I took the EcoSport in for it's oil change (8000+miles with 17% left on the reminder) I asked why Ford where recommending synthetic/mineral oil blend for the turbo engines.

He had just been on a Ford training course and they said the blend offered good protection in their millions of miles of testing, they where shown a dismantled engine that had 400,000 miles of endurance, hot and cold climate testing with negligible wear apparent. They (Ford) said mineral oil provided better lubrication for some components like valve stem seals:cautious:.

No explanation as to why the recommend full synthetic for the 2.5L hybrid engine:unsure:.

I'm sure it's fine, it meets the spec. Last time I looked there was only 1 non-Ford non-full-synthetic that met the spec (Penzoil?). The Ford stuff is marginally less expensive than Mobil 1.

Doesn't matter if it's syn-blend, or full-syn.

As long as it meets the latest WSS- Ford oil spec, that is all that matters.

Per the manual -

2.0L: 5W-30 synthetic blend or 0W-30 for cold climates WSS-W2C963-A1

2.5L: 0W-20 full synthetic WSS-W2C962-A1.

In a hybrid it does matter. Owners manual call for full synthetic and a specific WSS that differs from a semi synthetic.

I couldn’t imagine going 8000 miles on any Ecoboost motor between oil changes but that’s just me.

The oil in my G2 TT Raptor and my wife’s TT Platinum Explorer looks absolutely filthy after 2-3k miles, however my Hybrid Mavericks oil looked almost like new when I changed it at 8000 miles.

Good luck...

No, it is an oil recipe choice, independent of any Ford WSS- spec.

The base oil could come from Unicorn tears or bat wee for all we care, as long as it performs in the additive package they use with it, to meet performance.

(Yes, they want to suggest you use their Motorcraft brand Name, which happens to be a full syn.)

The word "synthetic" is descriptive of that particular Motorcraft brand oil formulation ONLY.

Again, it is not part of the WSS-M2C962-A1 spec.

Any random brand of WSS-M2C962-A1 spec oil on the market COULD be semi-syn if they really wanted to (Pennzoil Gold comes to mind although I think SOPUS is giving up on that one for economics reasons.)

Most don't go the semi-syn route because it no longer makes economic sense to put in stronger additives to counteract the effects of some GroupII base oil's effects and still meet SP/GF-6A/dexos1 engine test performance.

Doesn't matter if it's syn-blend, or full-syn. That formulation detail is irrelevant to the spec.

As long as it meets the latest WSS- Ford oil spec, that is all that matters.

**********************************************************************************************
The only thing that matters on an oil container you buy is these WSS numbers printed there:
Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 (0w-20 for the Hybrid only)
Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 (5w-30 for Ecoboost only)
Ford WSS-M2C963-A1 (0w-30, Ecoboost only when you might start it at below -10F)
**********************************************************************************************

This is like Fleet Manager training or something, trying to tell non-engineers and non-industry people what to look for, and what to ignore. (Ignore full-syn vs. semi-syn, WE DON'T CARE, YOU DON'T CARE).

Yea . have just under 10k miles after 3.3 years . oil change at dealership ( fordpass points ) once a year with blended ford oil . asked service advisor about oil choice and he recommended blended . one more oil change at dealership with remaining fordpass points (about $40 worth + some cash ) and then full synthetic oil will be used (probably Mobil 1 ) .
