I have a 2024 Maverick XLT 2.0 eco-boost. Owners manual states that you should not drive it at high speed during the break in period. What does Ford consider high speeds in the break in period? 80+ MPH? Thanks.

For me I never drove over 70 during break in. But I'm sure they didn't consider that high speed.

I wondered the same thing. It's a pretty useless stipulation if they don't tell you what speed to avoid.

The break-in period is for the transmission and differentials. The engine is broken in very quickly.

Don't regularly drive 90+ mph and keep the acceleration light and you should be good.

Drive with a light foot, I would keep it under 65 mph for the first 1000 miles, no jackrabbit starts, no towing.

Edit: What we are forgetting here is that the ICE in the hybrid doesn't run all the time as it does in a traditional ICE. That's what you want - to maximize the time it is in electric mode which increases MPG. Whereas the break-in period is also for the transmission and other moving parts, you may want to extend the break-in mileage to take this into account.

My 24 Eco-Boost break-in period was a trip from Tennessee to Michigan and back.

What I have always done with all my vehicles over the years, and have always gotten 140K miles or more out of my engines with no problems, is baby it for the first 1,200 miles or so, easy on the acceleration, don't go over 65 mph, vary the speed (during this time - RPMs), no towing of course, and then around 1,200 miles, do around 5 or 6 hard accelerations to about 70 MPH to expand and seat the rings in good and then change the oil to a good full synthetic (amsoil or mobil 1). Then change the oil again at around 4K to 5K miles and every 7K to 10K after that. But maybe I'm just old school still doing what I was taught in my auto mechanics class back in high school. But it works for me!

I've never been afraid of reaching at least speed limit speeds with any vehicle during break in, but not pushing it much more than that.

Otherwise I try to vary engine RPMs (avoid steady state engine speeds for long periods) and also limit my RPMs to about 4000, both for about the first 1000 miles.

There is no doubt larger amounts of initial wear to the engine during break in, you can find the evidence in the amount of metal found in your first oil sample, compared to future samples.

I waited till 3k and stayed in the speed limit in NY 55/60 then changed the oil. I never floored it and drove like a old man that I am.
