So, I saw this picture on another forum (Not my picture), and it gave me a great idea for extending the Maverick bed space up to 3 feet, making the bed length almost 8 feet total. If you could build some plywood sides around this to match the height of the truck bed, and beef it up with a 2x4 frame and bolt it down to the bed extender, then this would be a very innovative way of getting extra cargo space for occasional hauls. Obviously, it wouldn't stay on there permanently, so you would need a place to store the wood box when you aren't using it. The best part is the whole thing can be removed and attached easily via the hitch.

Great idea, but be cautious about the cargo weight, and how far back it is. Leverage is not always your friend.... 😬

I have a similar Idea for a enclosed 6ft bed. I want to take 2 sheets of diamond plate alloy. One is just smaller thant the inner surface of the tailgate. Then 2 are a square of that height that are hinged on the inside of the larger panel then the larger panel is hinged on the top inside edge of the tailgate. Kinda like those table for Jeeps and Bronco swing gates. So it stows flat against the gate when closed and flat down when open. But you can fold it up and the sides out to connect to the tailgate latches. The you have a full 6ft box for longer things and not have other stuff like gear and tools for a motorcycle or atv or mower slide out on to the highway without having to strap everything down.

Not my own idea I have posted the source elsewhere on this site in the last few days. Using 8 ft long 2x6 or 1x6 on its side resting on bedrails but extending past to reach just beyond the open tailgate skin the outside with exterior grade OSB sheathing above the bed rails. Using the inside of same flat 2x6 attach another piece of sheathing to extend and rest on the tailgate, that will enclose that side. Do same for other bedrail then connect across the top holding it together and then frame a door across the tailgate.

Apologies I may not have been understanding the whole thread so either ignore my last post or let me get even more in depth using the same idea.

This. Is. Perfect for us! We have a long, recumbent tandem bicycle and I've been looking at how to get it where we want to take it with the Maverick...and an extra 3ft would work WAY easier than trailering it, or somehow putting a BackRack up and skewering the front wheel drops to it...and best yet, it fits in the garage when we're not using it. Hot Dawg!

I had one of the Harbor Freight version bed extenders for a long time, never really used it and gave it away a few years ago.
BUT, for a really short bed like a Maverick I could see where it could be used.
BUT, the hitch socket is normally the only contact point and, depending on the slop, will allow loads to rock a bit side to side.
Heavier loads should be approached with caution.
Your loads will be way behind the rear axle.
Just my opinions anyway.
