I park in a parking garage at work and it never ceases to amaze me how careless people can be when dealing with other people’s property. I picked up my truck a couple of days ago and I have been freaking out about parking on Monday morning and worrying about how many dings and scratches I will find when I leave work. I saw some magnetic protector strips online but they were freakishly expensive, so off to Home Depot I went. Two packs of magnets, two pipe insulator “noodles” and some electrical tape. I taped a magnet to both ends of the “noodle”, wrapping them thoroughly to prevent the paint and stuck them on. I need to add a couple more magnets in the middle but they work for now. People probably think I’m nuts but I want the comfort of knowing I did everything I could to protect my truck!

In your situation I would get 2" foam board, cut in 4x4 squares, contour the inside to the truck, glue magnets on it and line both sides of the truck.

I don't think you are nuts. Not at all. I just think, that maybe you can do more. Never, ever underestimate the power of stupidity. :ROFLMAO:

I admire the way you used your "noodle" on this! ;) Good color match also. Do these pipe insulators come in Cactus Gray???? Hey, if it makes you feel better when you leave your vehicle that is all that counts! Does look like an invitation for some kind of prankster though....................

Don’t blame you for trying to mitigate the dings.

Unfortunately, the door egress, being so different on vehicles, assures that several makes/models will have a door edge crease that does not intersect your protector.

Its gotten worse with the advent of the origami sheet metal designs used by many manufacturers now.
I was looking at a late model Lexus suv yesterday and saw that the shaping of the design assured that no other cars sheet metal was safe from the opening door of that thing.

Do you not have an option of parking far away from the crowd?

Our other vehicle is a 2014 Edge limited. In the past 18 months, the SUV has been hit three times in parking lots. First the left rear. Then two months ago, the right front, which required replacing the lower part of the front of the car, as th eattaching tabs had been broken off. Last week, the rear bumper got side swiped either while my wife was having her knee replacement surgery, or while I was picking up a pizza for our supper that night.
Now I have my new Maverick and I am seriously thinking about ordering Glue on door ding protection stripping. I had them installed on my 2006 GMC dually after it was door dinged at the NASA Space Center. They looked great and were not too expensive. Pretty sure I ordered them from Amazon.

@GreenLady I'm still awaiting delivery, but definitely considering them. See this thread for some photos.

I giggle but this is smart and something I might do myself. No one in this city cares about your anything, only their own and they don't even care much for that either. I might need to do something like this for now. I want my first scratch to be my fault!

I think about door dings also and just try to park out a little further. On windy days I'll park into the wind (if possible) so the wind doesn't take the door out of a careless persons grip that parks next to me. I usually park around the same coworkers everyday and don't worry too much at work. In the end its just a truck and life is too short to obsess about it. I give you props on design and implantation! A couple of things come to mind. First, in my area that would attract unwanted attention and pretty sure someone would intentionally do something. Second, someone outright just take it! Third, I'd be afraid the magnets would leave scratches in the fragile clearcoat or paint. Thank you for taking the time to post your project!
