Tell me it hasn't got out of hand - Imagine all those deals on Amazon ;)

Hidden Chinese tech in solar inverters alarms US officials: Report

According to Reuters, experts have discovered secret cellular radios and other communications gear inside solar inverters and solar batteries made by Chinese companies. These components are widely used in U.S. infrastructure to connect solar panels to the grid and store solar energy.

Cheers

In this day and age, I believe the more correct question is: What is not snitching on you?

if it has a network connection, the answer is always yes!

Network Engineer here.

Probably. Your phone spies on you, so why shouldn't your car.
They are in cahoots and not to save you 15% on your car insurance either...lol

The Mozilla Foundation had a hit piece in late 2023 reviewing what a privacy disaster modern cars are. They have a more detailed write up looking at Ford's privacy policy. I'm a bit of a privacy nerd because I work in law enforcement. I've opted out of any individualized features (tracking, sending data, etc) via the infotainment screen. Additionally, my phone runs of GrapheneOS so I can basically sandbox the FordPass app so it has almost no ability to pull telemetry data from my phone. Finally, my Mav is registered in my work address and my Ford account details are all obfuscated with a disposable email address, temporary phone number, and a shipping address of a private mailbox.

Probably extreme steps for most people but after someone who I had a negative encounter with at work attempted to attack me off the job, I started taking my privacy a lot more seriously and its been a way of life for me since ~2020.

That' the basic privacy advice these days imo, but so uncommon; I'm on Graphene as well on any mobile device; I keep one at any given time that is for Google Services apps/testing, but as a daily driver it's great if you do use Play Store apps, you can sandbox Android Auto, FordPass, whatever you'd like. Nothing else comes close!

Read the fine print when you sign up for the Fordpass app, that is why they goat you into it by keeping navigation dependent on your approval. Just use Waze or buy a GPS and forget Ford.

There is good reason to hang onto or to get a Garmin. Just don't install their app and pair it to the GPS or you are back into a very similar situation.

That phone in your pocket tracks you even when off.
While true there are actually laws about what your cell phone carrier can and cannot do. However it is those apps that you install that are the wild west. Everyone has choices to make about what they install, what they give permissions to, and if they are going to carry a phone or not. Some phones still are listening when off. You can choose to put them in something that blocks it so you have a phone if you need it, or decide to not take it with you. The issue is the wild west attitude of companies and app developers to collect data from anyplace they can. You have to decide if you are going to allow it or not. If you don't care then this thread wasn't for you.

Or just not worry about it. I don't. I'm too close to the end instead of the beginning to worry about Ford or Google or anyone else spying on me. If they do they will see I walk around naked and scratch my butt all day 😜
It is difficult to anticipate what they will do with the data. I use for example, a family took advantage of a free trial period of the Disney channel, but as usual had to give them their payment info and agree to terms and conditions. Years later if I remember correctly, the child was injured at the theme park. When the family went to sue, Disney's lawyers produced the terms and conditions they agreed to, which nullified their right to sue Disney. And yes, everyone argued those agreements were for the trial period of the Disney channel. It had the usual mumbo jumbo to protect Disney, and it didn't stop with the TV channel. So, again you don't know what evil it will bind you too....

I hate to be paranoid,, but does my 2024 Maverick report my driving habits to anyone? LexisNexis, ,etc. I know that some vehicles allow you to report the data for a lower insurance premium, but doesn't do it automatically? Thanks. I have to go now, someone's after me. steve
Are you paranoid if they really are out to get you????

Seriously? Just scan the horizon and listen for the black helicopters every time you go out. Put a mask on to confuse the telescopic cameras trained on your residence. Mount a ready-carry assault rifle on the side of the console in case they come for you. Oh, and don't forget to go off-grid because they're recording your power and fuel usage as well, and disable the truck lights so that its harder to track at night.
I WANT my usage monitored. It lowers my insurance and makes it easier to claim warranty items. I just wish they were actually doing it.
