I agree. The console buttons should be on the dash. Plenty of space there.
Then there would be room for a traditional gear selector on the console. I've heard space savings as the main reason for the dial shifter.

The dial shifter gives the cabin a more spacious look and easier to reach across the console if need be.

Hey, all!
I have a very active rat terrier and she has the annoying habit of stepping on console buttons. Tried to get ahold of my ex-BIL to 3D print something, but no reply. So, using a $1 piece of 1/16 plastic and the hinges from a $1.99 craft project, I built my own. No screws: 3M tape. Nothing fancy, but it works! Should be self-explanatory via the pics, but if you'd like, I'll post a step-by-step follow up.

(And the cupholder messages are for my grandsons. )

Never understood why anyone would have their favorite pet sit in the front seat! In the unfortunate event that your shotgun air bag would deploy, your buddy would be no more!

I’ll have to get used to the dial. Most of the vehicles I’ve driven the last 50 years have had console shift or floor mounted for manual shift.

Agreed, in my opinion dogs should be in a carrier, or belted in with a harness.

My parents had a wreck decades ago with three Samoyeds in the back of the station wagon. Dad said they were bouncing around like fluffy white tumbleweeds, fortunately no one was badly hurt but for years afterwards one of the dogs would urinate in terror any time they had to take the wagon anywhere, another one would sit with his front paws braced against the seatback, just in case.

Same here, but I view the dial as an innovative feature of an innovative truck. With the electronic transmission, a shift lever seems a bit unnecessary. I grew up with stick shifts and column sticks, so yeah, it might take some getting used to. It's a new era of how vehicles operate.

Or better yet; maybe the dog shouldn't be located on the console while driving, Don.
Not while driving. I keep her water cup in the cup holders and she'll step on the buttons when she gravitated to it upon climbing in the Mav. I didn't always check it until i discovered i was in Decent mode or other. Otherwise, she's in a seat that rests on the console with a tether that attaches to her harness.

Here she is just before attaching her harness and tethered in her little console seat while driving.

I appreciate everyone concerned with Waffle's safety, but she does have her own seat on the console and is tethered while driving. At least give me a little credit, guys. 😆

Dog hair... Dog hair everywhere
I absolutely love dogs, though I don't currently have one. I can't handle dog hair in the truck! Open the windows and you've got yourself a furnado! (I did let my last dog in my Escape, so maybe that makes me a hypocrite?) ;)

Ahh I didn't zoom in close enough, touche!
I want one of those cup holder cushions, hell I want to put one in the cubby hole blank out. Hmm, I do have a 3D printer now, guess I better learn the software.

I like the idea but not sure I want to drill holes in the console. Maybe if it somehow snapped into place.

Eh. Nicely played mate. Simple elegant functional…. got some carbon fiber plastic that will fit perfectly and I’m gonna get the hinges and go after that after the holidays. Thanks for sharing.😀👍
