My thoughts 'zactly.The mating surface where the strut mounts you want it to be machined roughly so that it grips and cuts into the metal of the strut assembly so it does not slip as this is an alignment surface. From an engineering perspective you don't want two metal mating surfaces who need to be high interference to be painted anyway, as the paint layers could act as a lubricant to allow slippage at some point.
