The Pinto was designed 50 years ago. The revolutionary advance in design, modeling, and simulation tools and testing tools since then puts us in a much different space. 22 months of design today is easily worth three times 22 months in 1970.
Granted, vehicles are also far more complicated.
I think these taken together suggest that design issues are likely, but that catastrophic issues are probably not.
Agree and hope you're correct.

I owned a '72 Pinto that I bought new. It was bare bones (no AC, manual transmission, vinyl flooring) and sticker price was $2,000. Had the car in high school and thru college. Beat the crap out of it and never had a problem.

As far as Consumer Reports, they are heavily biased against American cars and would not put any weight in their reviews.

Wow thanks doctor death, obviously the Maverick is made off a proven platform. As far as the Pinto, it is far superior to Vegas and Gremlins. I still see Pintos running around here in Los Angeles but I haven't see the other two in decades. Cars with the tank in the back of a car between the rear ended and rear bumper are all prone to problems in a high speed accident. A lot of cars had the filler neck and gas cap on the back of the car but for safety the pinto had it on the side. Unfortunately the length of the filer tube that fit inside the tank was not long enough which allowed it to pull out in a high speed crash so in 1974 they lengthened it and added a fiberglass divider between the rear ended and the tank. All prior years had a free update kit that was installed by the dealer. The same Pinto platform was used for the Mustang II 1974-1978 and the Mercury Bobcat 1974-1980, The Pinto was produced 1971-1980. As a side note I have had several V8 Pintos that were very fast.

What is fun and thought provoking about comparing a truck everyone has on order with a car that had a issue with passenger dying in a fiery death. This vehical platform has been around for years and it just not a good comparison. Maybe next we can have a cheery comparison of the Maverick to a corvair that fatally punctured the drivers chest with the steering column while we are waiting.

I wouldn't take too much into what Consumer Reports has to say anymore, as they have lost their non bias take on a lot of things......
Exactly
They don’t like the big three.

Maverick's shortened development timeline came from a combination of different aspects. Utilizing an existing architecture that's already been in service, as well as, most arguably the most deciding factor being, removing a lot of Ford's red-tape at the management levels for approval rather than rushing the basic engineering process at specific milestones. Economies of scale, and de-contenting (limiting content features) allow for the cheaper entry level XL trim level to exist.
This!!!

So far, it is impossible. There are not enough Mavs to explode 500 times.

BTW, seriously, 500 death in explosions? I read some articles on internet, and they says only 27 death. I could be wrong. The internet may not be as credible as Pinto.
I drove that beast for a ton of miles. Before I bought it I looked under at the gas tank. what i saw was the two gas tank strap bolts about 6 to 8 inches long hanging down, plus they were forward of the tank itself, looking like two fangs, no wonder the tank would leak after a rear collision. I got my trusty hack saw out and cut them off right below the nut, fortunately I had no accidents, never will be sure if that was the issue. my guess is Ford bought one length of bolt for all tank hangers, regardless of model. but its a guess

This thread made me laugh. When I walked into the dealer to order my Maverick I told them that my last experience with a Ford was not very good. I told them I haven't owned a Ford for 50 years because of it. They asked me what my last Ford was and I told him a 72 Pinto. Without missing a beat the salesman smiled and said "we've gotten better".

Really? A post meant to be "fun" about a vehicle that the public has yet to experience and then compares it to a vehicle that supposedly caused "500+" fatalities back in the 80s/90s??

Really?

Read the earlier posts. That 500 figure is inaccurate

I am old enough to remember the gas tank behind the seat of my pickup seat...INSIDE the cab!
I still drive my 65 F100 long bed with the tank behind the seat. Can hear the gas sloshing around while driving. Always starts, easy to fix, but getting older and don't want to shift anymore (65 F100 Custom Cab 90,000 original miles 352 V3 with Overdrive ,3 on the tree with OD and factory air, - original paint all stock) Will be selling it when my Maverick arrives (XL)
