I have the basic XLT (2023) climate control. When I am driving normally, occasionally, the fan will increase to a higher level without my interaction. After a few minutes it will die back down to what it was. Is this normal?

What's the purpose of that, cooling the batteries? It feels rather uncomfortable.

Assuming you're in the manual mode with the the a/c on. Your a/c is also monitoring humidity and will try to adjust according. It also does this while driving with the just the vent and no a/c on. In this scenario, it will turn on the a/c occasionally and manipulate fan speed. Really annoying. But, as stated, its working as designed.

It only happens to me at highway speeds, no idea why. When it happens I usually just turn off the AC because it freezes me out at that point

I guess I understand it, but still, I own multiple cars including Lexus, Toyota, Honda, none of them will ever display this behavior. Feels very unnatural.

I’ve accepted that the thing has a mind of its own

It's not a bad idea, except I would only expect this "feature" to operate when using Auto mode and be disabled in Manual mode. And, never kick in when you are just using the vent with no a/c.

Even when using the vent in manual mode. You still have a temperature setting correct?

I pick a temp with my ‘Auto Air’ and it does the rest. Fan speed changes as needed to maintain the temp I select.

With my auto air off I’ve never noticed anything changing on its own but I did get a 2024 model.

You're trying to compare 🍎's to 🍊's.
Even between your Toyota and Lexus having different tires they may handle differently.
My wife has owned two Ford Escapes 09 and a 16 both of them will automatically turn on recirculate when using the air conditioner. Why 🤷‍♂️ I don't know.

Yes, with only vent selected, you do select your temperature, also.
Well, there you have it.
You have selected a cabin temperature. The climate control system is blending outside air with inside air. It will try and maintain that cabin temperature by increasing air volume.

When the temperature outside is high, AC works a LOT better on recirculate - an order of magnitude better. It's cooling down air that's already cooler than outside, rather than trying to cool down the hot outside air. If your car doesn't automatically do it, you should be manually turning on recirculate with AC. Cars with a "Max AC" setting pretty much universally trigger recirculate as part of it.

Which is something that bugs me about the Maverick, actually - the recirculate won't stay on, but turns itself off regularly.
