Ladies and Gentlemen....

Please check your metal keys.

I have an XLT.

My metal key DOES NOT operate the tailgate!

(Thankfully it does operate the driver's door.)

You have a key? 🧐 Does it start the truck too?

My 22 XLT feels like I’m going to break the tailgate lock using the key. 🤦🏻 Thick grease is one thing, but this seems wack.

I tried the keys on the tailgate tonight. A little tough to get the key in the first try, but it went and worked. The second try with other key was much better. Very cold out also

I would never actually try the keys because I have keyless entry. Probably wouldn’t ever try them unless the battery went completely flat.

I did find that you have to tilt the key (the part in your hand) slightly down and the key goes right in. I don't lock my tailgate unless I have something of value in the bed. It really only keeps honest people honest, as a determined thief would just cut my tonneau cover. Hopefully "out of sight, out of mind" will continue to work for me.

My key works in both, cold morning. The tailgate lock is at a bit of a tilt. The driver door unlocks and immediately warns that the alarm is about to sound unless the vehicle is started. And then it sounds. So glad I didn’t check this earlier this morning.

Seems tilting the key is a must.

FWIW: I just tried mine and it works perfectly. Better than the locks in my house or the older cars I've owned. Smooth as butter, with just enough resistance to let me know I'm actually doing something.

Both of mine work, but the lock is at a weird angle (up).

I'll play around to see if mine prefers a certain angle or temperature when I head out later. But I can tell you from my 3 months with the Maverick, unlocking and locking the tailgate twice per day, that mine seems to either require or strongly prefer I put the key in with the "correct" side up or down. If that makes sense. It is a double sided key that is cut on both sides and should therefore be able to be inserted either way, but mine acts like it is expecting an "old school" key that is only cut on one side and not the other. Like when you try to plug in an old USB plug and you always have it "upside down" the first time you try to plug it in. Then you flip it and it works.

Edit: Ok. Went out. The key-way/silver round face-plate on my lock cylinder has a lot of play in it side to side. Probably about 20 degrees from vertical each direction. It seems like maybe some of the problem (at least for me) is if the key is inserted at one of the extreme angles it will accept (all the way to the left or right of vertical in the range, probably a total of 40 degrees of total travel), the key will go in the face-plate, but then wont mate up with the actual lock cylinder inside until I rotate the key a bit to the left or right to get it closer to vertical. At least for today, I did not have the "you put the key in upside down" issue. It worked for me with the key flipped both directions.

I like posts like this. It gives me items to check when I pick up my Maverick in a couple of weeks
