This week, after posting my Mav Tremor for sale on Craigslist I was contacted by an out-of-state man from Micha Auto dealer on the west side of Houston, Tx. He was very interested in the truck so after preliminaries he indicated he would send a cashier's check for the agreed amount. On receiving the cashier's check, it was made out for $6k more than the agreed price (so shipping and logistics could be paid). Though I was surprised I indicated for that kind of money I would transport the Maverick anywhere in the country myself. He declined and requested the cashier's check be deposited ASAP. As you might guess, in talking with bank management I found the cashier's check to be fake even though it was drawn on a reputable credit union in Phoenix Az. So I have the check, the truck and related correspondence but fortunately no sale.
I expect I am not the only one that has been contacted by these folks so keep your guard up.

Ive had that same thing done to me with a full exhaust. They said it would be a cashiers check for $1000 dropped off by a delivery service that would in return take the exhaust away. I was like nah buddy how about you show up with cash........ no response after.

Yep. One of the most textbook scams there is. Check initially looks good but bounces later and you are out 100% of the amount you paid "on their behalf" to some random shipper or agent or intermediary, etc...

That scam has been around for years. Your car and money are both gone if you fall for it. Just tell them you deal only in cash and you'll never hear from them again.

Yes, well known scam. They get you with the generous $6k for incidentals. You are lucky - usually they send a courier or someone to get the vehicle before you realize the check is fake.

Another scam is a buyer will insist they want a vehicle check from a service you have never heard of - even if you have a Carfax. You put in your credit card to pay for the bogus report and they charge your card thousands of dollars. Of course, they don't buy the car.

BTW, AAA members can buy a Carfax report at a discount and premium AAA members get one free Carfax report every 90 days.

One of the oldest scams ever. The key to it was the "amount in excess of the agreement." They always want something done with the "excess."

Ah, the old Craigslist scam. I can't believe that shit works on people. Glad your bank could tell it was fake before you gave your truck away.
