I have been rear-ended twice in Albuquerque, NM, In six months. Both times by inattentive drivers in larger pickups. I was stopped or had to stop. No I didn't have to slam on the brakes. And, no, they were not on their phones. Neither I or the car was damaged. But without the hitch receiver there is a good chance the Maverick would have needed minor repairs. The lesson is. GET THE HITCH RECEIVER.

There is a bar across the back whether or not the receiver is purchased (part 5 or 6):

I was rear-ended with about 25mph difference in speed. I was not yet stopped and had just released the brakes due to traffic starting to flow again so part of the impact pushed me forward instead of using more of the crumple zone. The collision shop still found a minor "bruise" on the "frame" and that pushed the repair over $43,000.

Hitches actually transfer more energy to the crumple zones/unibody structure and increases the likelihood of significant structural damage (totaled) instead of the 5mph bumpers and covers taking the brunt.

That said I would never own a truck without a hitch. Even my Honda Civic has a 2" receiver on it.

yes to all this.

I don't have anything inserted in my hitch receiver until I need to use it, but I usually have a cover/plug there to keep moisture and grime (especially winter salt) out.

it will still eventually rust, but the cover helps. I wouldn't leave a ball or anything else connected when not in use because it does not help in a crash and it hurts like a mfer walking into it which can definitely happen in the night or anytime loading stuff over a closed tailgate.

Yeah I should say receiver. The hitch itself (in Maverick) is under the rear seat. I would never tow a thing with my Civic - just my bike rack.

I'm guessing that there's a good reason why Breaking Bad was based in Albuquerque. :ROFLMAO:
I lived there awhile back, beautiful surroundings for a "Border Town" 250 miles from the border.

What we need is more attentive drivers. I see more people on their phones nowadays.
