After reading all the horror stories about Mavs being rear ended and totaled for what looks like minor damage. I ordered a weather tech bump step. I am having second thoughts now. Mostly because it looks like it will block the view of the licence pate. Really don't like being pulled over by the cops.

Cops must have nothing to do in your area. I don't even use a front plate anymore. I will have the 24" bump step on mine.

Bought one for the same reason. No hassle yet.

Does not look like it intrudes to much. Hey for all the teslas I see in NJ with no front plate. Should be ok unless I get an aggressive cop.

The Weathertech bumpstep will do almost nothing in an accident. The hitch is directly mounted on the frame, and any impact with it will almost certainly deform the frame members. Frame damage in the rear makes it a writeoff, as each member costs US$24k to replace. If you're really worried about an accident, remove the hitch and change the rear brake lightbulbs to eye-searing superbright LEDs. They aren't legal in most places, but I doubt that anyone is checking. If you don't want to remove the hitch, then always tow a really poorly built trailer to take the hit instead.

Yeah I thought the same thing. But changed my mind after seeing it was made of plastic and may collapse. At least taking some of the impact out. I am not an engineer and can always take it off easily.

I ordered this one for $27.99

Juegoal Rear Bumper Protector, Vehicles Bumper Guard Hitch Step with Pin Lock and Stabilizer for Car and SUV

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GQTXL4N

Here is a review that mentions "rear ended":

5.0 out of 5 stars This works if you are rear ended!

Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022
Verified Purchase

I was rear ended in June 2022 and the damage amounted to $1,400.00. They missed the step and hit the corner. In sept. 2022, I was rear ended, again. (like that old song,,,If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all) This time I was hit directly on the step. It shattered into pieces, but no other damage. The other car had a large dent, no injuries. By shattering, all the energy was dissipated. I have to say this product worked as intended. I'm buying one for my daughter and grandkids, and pray they never need it.

I also bought this locking pin for $7.98:

RETRUE Trailer Hitch Receiver Pin Lock - Black, 2 Inch Receiver, 5/8" Dia Pin Lock for Securely Locking Trailer Hitch with Two Keys

Overly-bright "eye-searing" LED lighting is illegal in most places for a reason. It can impair night vision of people behind/in front of vehicles with illegal after-market lighting..

Yes, I'm a big guy and like that Weathertech is rated for 300#. And I will gladly pay double for a locally (USA) made step that is stronger. I am 330# And I don't need it snapping off if I ever step on it. Nice to know the low cost Juegoal Chinese step is out there, but it's not for me. WT is about 25 miles from me, and I will take a trip out there after I receive my truck to pickup all my goodies that they make.

I have some wicked LED's that flash 3 times then light steady. I'll have to see if I can make some work in the 3rd brakelight.

I also ordered the bumpstepXL for my Ridgeline. If you get it at Cabelas/Basspro with either a Club 10% off (wait for Tuesdays) or a $10/off (sign up for emails) you can save some $, and if you buy discounted gift cards (raise.com) you can save even more. And with ActiveJunky (or perhaps others) you can get 4.5% cashback.

And no, the bumpstep is not going to save you from a semi-truck rear ending you at 30mph (thank you, Captain Obvious). But it will help you in many more likely scenarios and there are plenty of photos and stories that confirm it.

Someone easing their way out of a parking spot opposite to you may not know how close they are to you until they come in contact. Tale as old as time. The only question then is, what are they going to come in contact with? You can choose between bumper/tailgate or bump-step. It can mean the difference between no to little damage or several thousand dollars in damage.

On a truck like a Ridgeline with a side swinging tailgate, the step becomes all that more useful than if the tailgate only swings down. Win-win.

Funny thing is I have worked in plastics for almost 50 years. Although weathertech may be made in the USA. I'd be shocked if the mold to produce them was. Most tooling is made in China today. Very easy to just make another mold and make a knockoff. It has happened many times.

Pulling some trailers block the tag too. I have the step and a piece of reflective tape across the front of the step.
