I'm aware of the powerboost direct replacements, but can't justify spending ~$120 each when I primarily listen to podcasts and NPR. However, the XLT speakers are just terrible and I need something a little better.

Recommendations for budget friendly options?

Brilliant, thanks! I don't have a great deal of experience with car audio. They a reasonably straightforward install?
I haven't installed them yet. The speakers were mentioned here on the forum with positive results.

Are they plug and play with the existing harness or do you need to splice and rewire? And so they fit the door card without trimming?

Order the connectors, no need to cut wires. Connectors are mentioned here on the forum.

Just wanting to add that while the power boost speaker upgrade is more than what you are budgeting. It does replace 4 of the six speakers in the truck for that price. After doing the swap my self I noticed that the tweeter replacement up front has really helped out with hearing the lyrics. It cleans up the audio a lot and makes it much more enjoyable to hear, I'm sure it would help out with the podcasts as well. The door speakers offer slightly better bass, but I'm still going to be looking to do a full speaker swap by replacing the back two next, and possibly adding an 8" sub later.

Good luck with what ever you wind up swapping in there, the XLT speakers are definitly the weakest link on this pick up.

You know, I haven't even really looked, but does the XLT have tweeters? I thought it was just the front door and rear b-pillar speakers.

It does have 2, 1" tweeters up front. The power B comes with them in the package and like the door speakers they are plug and play. Full disclosure, they are a pain to get to. Getting them uncovered was the hardest part of the swap. There is a YouTube channel called blakescars I believe that has a video showing them. There's probably several threads on here as well if you go digging for a bit.

Slightly less ideal but you could also get the Powerbass coaxial 6.5 speakers for $20 cheaper and just replace the doors.

If you get other speakers expect to account for another $20-25 for the speaker mount rings and adapter harness (unless buying through Crutchfield which includes them, I believe).
