I'm planning to add an after market bed extender probably next year, and while looking around, I came across this YouTube video. The fella added a mesh screen to his Tundra bed extender. It's a cheap mod that's functional and looks good to boot, I was impressed.

Sorry if this is a dumb question: I don't have an impact driver. Would pre-drilling holes and using metal screws work or no?

That's exactly how I would do it.

I use a regular drill to install self-tapping screws, especially into aluminum, so you don't need a impact driver.
To address the gap at the bottom, perhaps trimming the legs shorter would help. All four legs would need to be trimmed and the pivots would need to be lowered. Add some screw-on chair leg rubber tips to avoid metal to metal clanking noises and it's done.

One of the comments in that YouTube vide included a person who addressed the gap in the bottom by using the same mesh, folded in half.

This works well. You can find decent gutter guards at Lowes or Home Depot. I also added door edge molding along the edges to keep from bending them or scraping objects with them.

Not anything related to the Maverick, but those gutter guards are also good for other things. I use them for covering the crawl space openings around the foundation of my house. I have those aluminum open/close vent openings there, about 18" long, 7" deep. Work great, keeping leaves and trash out, so I don't need to clean them out anymore. They were cheap, used to be couple bucks for 3 foot section, now $3.48. (thank you Mr. inflation) There are 3 different colors if I remember correctly.

That really is a great idea, I just might have to do that.
