Scott A. = I interrup this thread about break-in to agree with all you wrote and look forward to less maintenance when I buy my first EV [probably for my wife to drive] . I am waiting until the next gen batteries will provide a realistic range of 400+ miles between charges.

Both my sons have one EV each and love the freedom from maintenance you reference. The son who took his on a road trip encountered all the frustrations related to charging stations that have been reported.

We now return to our regularly scheduled program "Break-in do's and don'ts"

I have owned two brand new EVs, a 2020 Kona EV and a 2022 Ioniq 5 EV. Technically, there is far less maintenance on brakes, engine oil changes, transmission oil changes, muffler replacements but, as I found out, there are battery coolant changes (far more expensive than ANY oil change), the batteries cannot be repaired on many models and must be replaced (how is that environmentally beneficial), not to mention increased insurance costs. I refuse to buy another EV until I see major, major improvements in the charging infrastructure.

Every single road trip has to be planned to figure out where to stop for a recharge (excluding Teslas). When is the last time you had to do this for gas stations? Ohhh ... never. When is the last time you arrived at a closed gas station and there wasn't another one nearby? Yeah, this happens on the Alaskan highway but rarely anywhere else.

There are pros and cons to everything we buy but, right now, hybrids are the better choice and why I have a 2025 Maverick Lariat on order.

I’ll do my first oil change at 3,000 miles and then at 9,000 then 15,000 then every 5,000 on and on.

528,000 trouble free miles out of a 4 banger with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, Mobil 1 full syn.

Wore out straight six at 394,000 miles with roach oil with 5,000 mile change intervals.
Never had a problem.

350,000 out of another.
I could go on.
Never have I dumped oil early.

As for break in, I have always varied my speed and took it easy, no high speeds and no towing for about 500 miles. Then for the next 500 I drive it like I stole it. Think sport mode.
Now read back, 528,000 miles, 394,000 miles. This I swear is the truth.

Ok I’m ready,
Flame me:;

Your truck came without an owners manual?
In the '25s, this is correct.
Like many vehicles, no paper manual. It's in the Infotainment System screen. Or you can get the searchable .pdf at ford.com

Ty.our 23 has a traditional book manual.

If your truck says you still have 50% oil life remaining, you should change the oil.

Wondering if first oil change should also be at 1,000 miles

This is the horses mouth. This guy is the expert that actually has the lap and data to prove not only should you change the first one early but he also has a video proving you are perfectly ok going by the olm for oil changes.

YES!...It flushes out all the metal shavings that may be in the engine.
So !
My filter is not able to filter out metal shavings ? If the metal shavings are so heavy the pump can’t push them to the filter they’ll settle prolly on the drain plug magnet, although I’ve never seen such.
I find that hilariously funny. I’m sorry,
But I’m a guy who’s takes multiple engines past 350,000 miles. One past 500,000 one to 394,000.
Without early oil changes.
But I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Pay me no never mind.

There are other components to consider during the "break in" period. In you hybrid there is the CVT. All-wheel drive components. Regen system and brakes.

That said, if you drive with a light foot, accelerate moderately, anticipate stops and brake lightly, you should be fine. Just don't piss off other drivers and pull over if you see a line form behind you. Although you Canadians have a reputation of being very polite. Hopefully that extends to pokey drivers.
‘Pokey drivers’ ok. When I first read it I thought it said hockey players.

Never do early oil changes early either.i go by fords recommendation of every 5000 miles.that includes the first one. If Ford thought it was a good idea to change oil earlier they would recommend it.

I also have taken many way past 300k and ecoboost at that.
What you are failing to grasp is the stuff the filter can’t get. Such as silicates. They cause wear but won’t get caught. Take the time and watch that link with lake speed jr. it’s literally the data and science everyone wants to see given.

He actually lays out way it’s a good idea to change early. Then move on to normal changes at the olm recommendations. He runs and owns a competitor to blackstone.

You forget ford also is aware of expected lifespans. Those are what they expect thing to last over a certain time. Which they certainly will. But this could potentially extend past those expected lifespans of ford.
So if you don’t plan to keep it for the long haul. You are correct no need to do it. But it is a better option to change early.
You will never hear an aftermarket engineering firm or builder not recommend it. You will also never see an oil analyst not recommend the early oil change.
Different interest at had for both parties. One had an interest in making a product that last an acceptable amount of time then sell you another. One is only interested in making your engine live longer.
