Hey guys, just got a 2024 maverick xl hybrid. love it so far, very smooth ride and great gas mileage. My question is about the "break in". Is there anything other than oil I should change around 1000 miles? The first maintenance in the app says at 10k which seems like a long time. Is there a good reason I should get the dealer to do it as opposed to doing it myself?

Thank, Colin

maintenance is simple on the hybrid. Diy if you have the time.

Just trying to have a conversation about it, as I am new to the forum.

Edit: Also my first NEW vehicle
Well good for you! My first new car was a 1978 Mustang ll. This hybrid makes almost all us of new first timers. I first read the manual, then use this forum to ask questions/get new information. Make sure all recalls are taken care. I've had no problems with my 2022 Lariat, but still learning and getting more comfortable with the hybrid idea.

Congrat's on your first new truck!

You need to follow a maintenance schedule that allows you to sleep at night, but changing oil at 1K miles is not necessary for the benefit of the engine. For you, perhaps. Again, go with what makes you comfortable. Your time & money.

As for the where, if you have the time/skills, I always prefer DIY for maintenance. You one cares more about your truck than you. And it's the only way to know for sure things are done properly. It's also a good idea to log the service into your Ford account, & keep receipts.

Welcome and enjoy your Maverick. I wasn’t trying to be confrontational. I realize the search function on this forum is lackluster at best, you just caught me before coffee

This. I have been changing my own oil going on 40 years, even when it was cheaper/quicker to have someone else do it. I have screwed up things that cost me money, and I have made messes that the EPA would probably frown upon - but I learned from those mistakes every single time. Maybe even more importantly, it got me up close and personal with the vehicle. Every time you get under the truck, it's an opportunity to catch a leak or see something out of place.

As for when/how often, that's a classic internet argument. I usually go with the flow and follow the vehicle's on-board recommendation - but with a new car (or when buying used) I see merit in getting an oil change done early on for a fresh start. Have fun!

One thing to remember with Maverick hybrids is that about 50% of your miles are electric. It will vary depending on where you drive, and how you drive. Mine runs very close to 50%.

You might want to keep this in mind if you decide to change your oil early. Nothing wrong with an early change if that is what you want. But for a hybrid, a change at 1,000 odometer miles is actually a change with about 500 miles on the engine.

Of course don’t exceed the Ford recommended time or odometer mileage.

1000 miles is too soon. Learn to look at your trip summary showing the miles in blue that were all-electric. That means the ICE wasn't running which is what you want - max miles all-electric. If, in a 10 mile trip, 4.6 miles are all-electric, your ICE ran 54% of the time. Using this example, at 1k miles, your ICE has 540 miles on it.

Just drive it with a light foot for the first couple thou miles. Accelerate when you must to merge onto a freeway and learn to use the regenerative brake coach. That charges your battery AND saves brake pads both at the same time. You will go almost 600 miles between fill-ups.

Oil - when you do finally change it, use hybrid-specific fully synthetic. I am partial to Mobil-1 but there are other oils out there.

Mavs look great in Iconic silver. Be aware silver blends into the road and on cloudy gray days, into the backgound. This means your visibility to others is minimized. In my silver GMC Canyon even with DRL's, I turned on my parking lights to have lights in the rear.

Many happy, safe miles.

Changing you oil is the most important thing for you vehicle. I change mine every 5 K. I change the original break in oil before 2K. As for types of oil? Only use recommended oil From Ford. It must have the recommended oil spec number on the bottle. Type is up to you, but I personally prefer Valvoline. It has the spec # on the bottle. I use only Motorcraft oil filters. Ive followed this since my first ford in 1984. Now on FORD #10. Never had a problem with oil!

Thank you, I'll keep in mind to drive light for the first while. I generally don't drive very fast anyway, or accelerate hard. Reading from other threads I came to the conclusion that I should change at 1000 miles but maybe change that to 2000 from what people have said on this thread. After the initial oil change I'll probably just listen to the computer onboard.

From my understanding, there's nothing wrong with exceeding the oil change interval of 3 months if you don't drive much. For instance, I've been told about a year between oil changes is fun if you're only driving a few thousand miles in that time.

Our explorer was scheduled for an oil change last October, but it's only been driven 2,000 miles or so since then.
