I'm going to just group everything into this thread. I'll update it as there is new information but this will document my process so that others who are at other stages can compare to their own. I make no promises we have similar experiences on anything listed. Don't expect this to change often as to quote to lacky from the first (fourth) Star Wars movie, "No need to report ... until there is something to report."

I do want to thank the kind words from everyone here over the past several months, especially yesterday. Of all of the vehicle threads I've visited, this is one of the more active ones.

August 20, 2022
I started window shopping new vehicles to replace the 2006 Saturn Vue that had served its time. I sent a request to Long-Lewis River Region about a Maverick they had on their website. Obviously, I didn't know anything about the process at that point.

August 23, 2022
After having a conversation with my salesman, we agreed to put my name on the list to place an order when the order banks opened. I put down a $100 deposit to be put on that list. Again, not knowing much about the process I told my wife I will be surprised if they call me within the first week or two.

September 16, 2022
My salesman surprises me by calling me first thing in the morning to come down and place an order. Since I live two miles away and had an opening, I swung down. We used the 2022 build tool to prep the order because Ford hadn't released the 2023 tool yet. Having been lurking here by that point, I knew enough to tell my salesman that my non-negotiables were auto cruise and 4K. He sent me a copy of my order later that afternoon for me to sign and pay an addition $400 for a total $500 deposit.

September 24, 2022
I received my order confirmation email from Ford. I think the delay had to do with the COVP process. Image was generic Lariat.

I received my first 45-day email. First three messages were unique. But last one I received on March 24 matched February 6 word for word.

It became obvious my truck would not be scheduled in time to arrive before June. Having just used my Saturn for a local campout the weekend before, I knew I simply couldn't wait to replace it any longer. I went to the dealership and got a good deal on a 2022 Explorer Limited. The dealership was even gracious enough to move the $500 I already paid on the Maverick over to the Explorer as well as keep the Maverick order open with right of first refusal. As I was signing the papers, the recall issue became apparent. Seems Ford put out a stop-delivery two days before I walked in. As I literally just signed the papers and my trade was already in the garage, the dealership loaned me a vehicle while I wait for the Explorer recall to be worked.

To my surprise, I got scheduled! Scheduled for the week of June 5, 2023... the week I needed it, of course. Interestingly, I noticed Ford updated their CGI as even the wheels are accurate.

Of course, that lead to a discussion between the wife and I how we would handle the Maverick. Upon cross-comparison and discussion, it was decided we would swap out the Escape for the Maverick and my wife would then take over the Explorer.

Later in the day, I received a call from the dealership: my loaner was coming up on 30 days and I only had a 30-day contract because they literally didn't expect the recall to take this long. So, I swung by this morning and swapped it out for another loaner. This one rolled off the carrier three days ago.

So, Loaner 2 had an imbalanced tire somewhere as it was shaking the crap out of me at highway speeds. So, Loaner 3. No eta on the Explorer and our strategy has changed: if Explorer is still waiting on recall when Maverick arrives, Explorer goes.

Explorer recall update: Language change from my dealership. After a month and a half of "waiting on Ford to share the solution," this morning's update changed to "we are still waiting on the part." This is the first time a part for the Explorer was ever mentioned. It fits, however, with a side conversation I had with one of our resident dealership representatives. Software wasn't actually fixing the problem but dealers had found replacing the rear camera does. So, I am just waiting on Ford to source enough replacement cameras for my dealership to get one, it seems.

Window Sticker Popped this morning for June 6 Build. Also, no word on Explorer. That part is aggravating as I just made my second payment this morning.

Dealer wanted Loaner 3 back. Which is absolutely fine by me as Loaner 4 is niiiiice. F-150 Lariat with options = yes, please. I was faked out this morning when I went to go swap as there was an Atlas Blue Maverick at the entrance. Unfortunately, not mine.

Wow...your loaners are cool...you're sorta sideways-lucky as we say back home.

Looks like you are going to be car poor but you probably couldn't get two better new vehicles for the price. Congrats Bob!!

I loathe car payments. So, these two will likely be it for long time. As I work from home and my kids will both graduate high school within 5 years, the need for a new vehicle afterwards just isn't there. The Maverick was always intended to be run until the wheels fall off and I have several friends with Explorers rocking 200,000+ miles.

That F-150 Heritage Edition is gorgeous, makes me kind of want one even though I have no use for a truck that massive and expensive.

Updated post 1.

On to Loaner 3! Loaner 2 had a tire imbalance and the tire guy was out... Go figure. Still no ETA on the Explorer and so we changed plans. If Explorer is still at dealership when Maverick arrives, it will stay there.

Light at the end of the Explorer tunnel? Dealership language changed to "waiting on parts" this morning. That was the first time they ever mentioned a part being needed for what had been just a software update. This fits, however, with a side conversation I had with @KevCuRaoi who mentioned other dealerships finding replacing the rear camera in total fixes the problem.

So, it seems I am waiting on Ford to source some more cameras so my dealership can replace it.

Just wondering, I know you’re in a unique position with buying a new car that you can’t drive due to a recall, but do Ford dealerships typically give loaner cars when your car is being serviced? I’ve had a Mazda for 8 years and been to 3 different dealerships and they all give loaner cars if you call in advance and request one.

Don't know. They gave me the option to swap to a different Explorer without the recall or keep that one and they'll just give me a loaner. I chose the latter. They are marking it up as "good will" while I drive around with their name in the license plate holder. It's a bit of win-win.

Hopefully Ford has come up with a vehicle (loaner 3?) that you can rely on.

It was good of them to do. There are various ways it could have gone worse, like not getting a loaner after you've found that the Explorer has a stop-sale and you can't take possession. Plus it certainly motivates them a lot to get your Explorer sorted out so they can get their loaner back.

As an aside, it looks like you've ordered what I ordered and am driving now. ecoboost awd 4k tow with the 18" wheel option. The wheels like this came on the First Edition hybrid, but otherwise you won't see them much and I still think they're the best looking factory wheel. There's an all-black version in the Black Appearance Package but I don't like it as much; in most if not all all-black wheels you lose a lot of detail especially at a distance.

Good luck with both vehicles. If the Explorer sits until the Maverick comes that could get pretty weird, financially. I would hope they just give you trade value equal to what you paid.?

I plan to force the issue on their 3-day; 300-mile no excuse refund on the grounds I have hit zero on both counts.

Seems my hopes were artificially raised last week. Those hopes were killed last Friday when my Explorer was moved to the "long term" service parking. Still no news from Ford on when they plan to roll out a fix for the Explorer and today marks 8 weeks since I bought it. Maverick is to be built in only 4 weeks meaning I am likely closer to my Maverick arriving than my Explorer purchase and have yet to take the Explorer home...

Currently trending for the dealership to buy back the Explorer if it is still on their lot when the Maverick arrives.

Ford has finally updated their recall for the Explorer... by replacing it with a new one.

The remedy is under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 26, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S23. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall number 23V-022. Vehicles previously repaired under 23V-022 will need to have the new remedy performed.

Wife and I are in agreement if Maverick (June 8 pending build) shows up before Explorer is fixed, dealer will keep the Explorer.

T-13 days: No window sticker (and no Explorer). The 6/6 date has held for a few days now. Will update in a week or when the sticker pops.
