One glaring issue I have is that when my wife and I are going somewhere and I have my music playing via bluetooth, my wife decides she needs to charge her phone and it defaults to her phone completely and my music is no longer available until she unplugs. Is this normal?

It is indeed normal operation for this truck. One quick fix would be to plug her phone to the usb ports behind the center console, I've found that wires reach around just as well from there as from below the AC controls.

If you don't use either Android Auto or Carplay it you might as well turn those off, though I don't know if you can do that, I've never tried it in my mav but every other vehicle I've had has had a toggle for that. I'll check and be back.

My xlt doesn’t switch to my wife’s phone if’s she is using just the 12v under dash, only if she plugs into the USB port.

I think it is a feature of Ford Sync because it even happens in my 2014 Fiesta!

Does the manual say how to set one phone as "primary"? Other systems do.

Every vehicle with Android Auto / Carplay will have bluetooth overriden to the connected phone projecting on the infotainment system. No real way around it. Vehicles with an AUX input will generally let you use that unchallenged, but alas the mav doesn't have any.

Very simple, use the ports in the back or get a cigarette lighter USB plug. I have one plugged in so the kids don’t jack my music.
