Wow i can't believe how far this thread has gone. The OP has an answer for everyone.
step one.
Lock your doors any way you want. by hand. key fob. Key . A coat hanger through the crack of the window.
Step two .unlock the tailgate with the key.
Step 3 quitcherbitchin.
Locking a tailgate on a pick up truck is like locking the doors on my jeep with the top down. I don't care if you have a cap or tonneau cover. Someone can get into the back in a second. Just grab and rip it open. Sorry but this thread is ridiculous

needs a tailgate handle sensor for opening and locking. Constantly having to pull out the fob or go to the door keypad to open or lock the tailgate. Annoying as hell.

WOW, all I have is a 2022 XL (plain Jane), 1st one on the lot were I got it. I have to use the key all the time

Keypad on the tailgate should fix it if it can work with the factory wired keypad that came with my truck.

I see Ford no longer offers the factory keypad. They prolly read the forum and see most people just shrug their shoulders and bend over.

Given the parts bin mentality when building vehicles, I'm surprised nobody has toyed with adding a proximity sensor to the tailgate. It wouldn't surprise me if a handle from a Ranger or even an F150 (or a sensor inside of the handle) might fit the Maverick, if there's a way to tie into the OBDII setup to notify of key & hand presence.

I don't open/close my tailgate enough to do the research necessary, but if somebody does determine its possible, I'd be tempted. - I've already installed the dimming mirror, hardwired front/rear dashcam, and some other items, why not that.

I’m not sure what you’re finding annoying. If your truck is locked then so is the bed, if unlocked likewise. With my locked retractable cover, no one is getting in unless they have a blow torch or cutting tool. I like that.

Maybe I can move the passenger side sensor to the tailgate ?

I still have an old work truck with crank windows and manual pop up door locks. Prefer the new methods.

I would like it to lock but only when I want it to lock. Not when I lock the cabin.

all it needs is a fob tied sensor like the door handle. I wonder if that can be added

It's really a simple fix for ya...

Unplug the connection for the power tailgate lock and .......
here's the difficult part, use the friggin' key to lock/unlock the tailgate whenever you desire....

I remember when tailgates didn't have a lock, imagine the horror of that.......

I imagine that if the tailgate had a proximity sensor to open it some folks would complain that they get hit in the head when connecting the trailer and tow chains because they had the key fob in their pocket.

To recap my situation, I ordered a Maverick XLT with CP360 and the lux package on 15 October. Still not in production, I decided to do a search at the end of January all along the SE USA. What I found was an XL that a customer ordered, but had to cancel. He ordered the spray in bed liner and hard top, trifold tonneau cover. He did not order the hitch.

After I purchased it, I found an OEM hitch/receiver, which was installed today. The shop specializes in hitch and wiring installation. They looked everywhere for a wiring harness, OEM, and after market, and there’s not any being made. Furthermore, there’s nowhere to plug in a wiring harness, and Ford doesn’t recommend doing a Hotwire installation by cutting and splicing into any existing wires, as it will void the warranty.


I do have a 4k tow package truck.

don’t think you understand the issue for those who didn’t purchase the $100 tow package or were forced due to production issues to take one. Unlike every other truck on the planet it was almost impossible to wire even a 4.

Ford fixed it. Even though there was the usual chorus of “ it’s a cheap truck made for the homeless, deal with it”

Any chance you could get your story straight? Again, Ford has offered a 4-flat kit for years, Curt has a plug & play one also available. You make it sound like those who did not buy a 4K or $100 hitch package have no options. If your "specialty" shop couldn't find either product within 5 minutes online, I'm not sure I'd trust their input.

There were no wiring options very early on. There were several threads like that one. No harness from Ford or aftermarket. No pigtail or harness like the Hyundai included and like every other truck in existence has on no tow vehicles. Only way was wire splicing. Risky maneuver on a rolling computer.

regardless, Ford remedied that design flaw.

I expect passive entry will make Lux or Lariat by the time I purchase my next Maverick

here maybe this will help. Again, Ford fixed this so kudos to them. We can only hope they remedy the passive-entry debacle in as timely a manner


Unless your truck came with the wiring harness, there's not anything you can add right now to make it work, including "hot wiring", or connecting anything with a pigtail.

I spent several hours with the Shop Foreman at the local Ford dealer this morning. He researched the schematics, made printouts, and went out to my truck and inspected it. He opened the fuse box, and there are certain fuses that are not included in the fuse well, and no connector inside those certain spaces to push them in place. Ford specifically eliminated that to save money unless you ordered the towing option. There isn't any additional wiring harness and no adapter installed, and that means no easy way to connect either a 4 pin or 7 pin harness.



Ford did eventually make life easier if you want to add a hitch to a truck after purchase

The simpler and more convenient way should be to apply the stick-on battery keypad on the tailgate unless there's some reason you cant have 2 keypads. My truck came with the factory mount keypad. I have a stick-on on order.

Used to apply Pop&Locks to old school tailgates or had a locking cap. Passive entry is the dream
