For a very old, retired mechanic this stuff is way over my head, I have a great respect for the engineers that design these transmissions, there actually very simple compared to 8/9/10 speed tranny, these people are geniuses, I would like to be around in 10/20/30 years to see what they come up with.I think the dual MG + ICE + planetary gear power sharing setup is pure genius. Sure, in 50 years someone will look back and see it as a sketchy kludge, but I wasn't ready to jump into a pure EV. In a world moving away from petroleum, it's a good solution.
The Toyota and Ford eCVT transmissions are amazingly clever, and actually very simple. Mechanically way way less complicated than any other transmission. There are maybe 20 moving parts, which is why so many taxis are Priuses. The complexity is all in the computer. (Even the software itself isn't that sophisticated - it just needs to run fast -essentially real time - and fast computers weren't cheap enough until about when the Prius came out.)For a very old, retired mechanic this stuff is way over my head, I have a great respect for the engineers that design these transmissions, there actually very simple compared to 8/9/10 speed tranny, these people are geniuses, I would like to be around in 10/20/30 years to see what they come up with.
