I'm planning on mounting a roughly 400 lb camper to the back of my truck. With two people sleeping it will be about 600lbs on the bed sides. I took the side trim off to see if mounting without it would work, but sadly it doesn't look like it. I did notice something interesting though. The trim seems to be resting maybe half an inch off the metal bed rail and is resting on a bunch of plastic rectangles.

This doesn't look super sturdy. Does anyone know if these have any maximum weight rating?

The bed racks that sit on the bed sides are rated for a lot more than that. I don't see a problem but someone else might know better.

Any update? Any reason why you could not mount directly to the rails? I think there is an opportunity for someone to develop an aftermarket trim piece that has more support by engaging more closely to the frame or using a more hardy material.
