with your truck locked up and off, if you remote start it using the Ford app, does that energize the 12v pigtails and do they stay energized when you unlock the truck (and open the tailgate)?

That would be a simple work around for my main usage concerns…..though I would prefer them to just be energized for a while anytime you change the status from locked to unlocked.

Are you using the provided 12v wiring? If so then your lights only come on with the ignition on (or for a brief epriod after turning off the ignition) right?

Thanks. Luckily I haven't had deep sleep issues with my hybrid yet but I understand they could be coming down the road.
Tap into the fuse for the over head dome light? No Mav yet here so I can't tell you which one that is.

The lux packages come with a light on the left cubby panel that from what my brother-in-law tells me it's always hot.

So the wiring is likely already there in some form.

I do agree that activating it for a short amount of time with door unlock would be ideal.

Upon further inspection in my XL, when you hit the unlock button, the rear brake lights and the overhead white light turn on for a period of about 5 to 10 seconds. The brake lights turn off immediately, but the overhead white light fades out.

I wouldn't mind at all if the bed lights followed that pattern, just long enough to see what you need to unload from underneath the tonneau cover.

I'm looking at doing bed lights but to control them I'm looking along these lines:

Amazon.com: Nilight - 90116C 2 Gang Rocker Switch Panel with 4.8 Amp Dual USB Charger Voltmeter Waterproof 12V-24V DC Rocker Switch with Night Glow Stickers for CarsTrucks Boats RVs : Automotive

If you wire it correctly, you can use one switch for a master to apply power to everything else, and the second switch to control the lights. This has a display that shows your battery voltage and two USB charging ports. If you look there are a bunch of configurations for these, and they are easy to mount to the box cover or if you have the bed cubbies you can mount them in there.

I like the look of that one....but too bad the power to the 12v pigtails isn't on all of the time or at least when you unlock the truck.
You still have to have the truck running to use it if you want to use the power through the pigtails.

Maybe the original poster can change the title of this thread to define what we are truly trying to accomplish here.

There is no shortage of ideas out there for switches and lights. The problem is, having these only available after the key has been turned on is not ideal.

What we are trying to accomplish here is getting access to power in the bed without having the key in the socket.

Through other threads, I have come to determine that the XLT and Lariats with the lux package have a bed light on the left side of the truck. There is a switch next to the light that turns on both the overhead cargo light and the bed light.

In addition, when the truck is unlocked, both of these lights turn on for a short period of time. If you have that on the truck, the solution is simple. Tap into the light for your added bed lights

In my XL, and in trucks without the lux package, unlocking the door also turns on the overhead cargo light for a period of time.

My goal is to determine how we can add a switch into the bed that will accomplish the same thing as the lux packages.

It will undoubtedly require running some new wires, and possibly some forscan changes.

Yeah, I picked to not go with the lux package on my XLT order, mostly because I didn't feel like I wanted a lot of the stuff in the package, plus I wanted to add another storage cubby.

Right now, it looks like the solution choices for added bed LED lights to come on without using the key (since nobody has found some setting in Forscan that I haven't heard of yet) are:

1. Tapping into some other wire, possibly the cargo light, but it sounds like it is only on for a really short time after unlocking.

2. Rigging in a 12v battery that can be charged by the pigtails when the truck is running, then having battery go to a switch then on to the LED lights.

3. Saying screw it on having a wired-in light and just putting in a 12v plug and a non-wired LED light (the type that goes under a cabinet that is rechargable). The 12v plug can charge the non-wired light through a USB plug when you are driving the truck when needed.

Does anyone know if the pigtails are hot when you start the truck using the ford app?
Say you are walking up to the truck from getting groceries and you use your phone to start it, then when you get close to the truck running truck, you unlock it with the fob to open the tailgate.....no going inside the cab, are the 12v pigtails hot?

If so, I think that might just work well enough for me.

Yeah unfortunately my main use case is tossing stuff in the bed when I'm coming back to my truck. So opening the door, putting in the key, and then walking back to the bed is not ideal.

I can put my voltmeter back on and try it with turning on the Ford app when I get home from work today.

But I I don't see that as a solution I am looking for. The Ford app can sometimes take up to a minute or more to unlock the door or start the car.

I think that it is very likely that the wiring harness that feeds the bed lighting and switch in the lux packages is in our cars. We just got to find where to plug into it and we can get the functionality of the switch in the luxury package.
