Pay attention to the tailgate weight rating. Internet picture for attention.

Is the limit 300lb? or 400lb? I've seen different #s.

neither. The Maverick limits specified are for the tailgate in fully open (flat) configuration and the partially open to level with wheel wells for carrying long items. That picture of the damaged top of F-150 tailgate was likley caused by abuse- not simply loading and transporting flat sheets.

Looks to me like he went way to fast over a really big bump. A$$holes learn the hard way.

That is probably conservatively 1,200lbs of wood (Very conservatively...30 sheets @ 40lbs - those OSB are probably heavier). Also as has been said the weight ratings are related to being in the down/angled positions, there isn't a rating for what can be put on top of it when upright - I assume more than the 500lbs, but at that point you're likely already pushing the overall weight rating if there is 500lbs load over the upright gate...and also definitely entering stupid territory :)

One of my coworkers ruined a fairly new F-150 tailgate, in this manner, by throwing a steel bale/box/cube into the back and driving about 100 yards on the job site (ungraded dirt area...)
