Has anyone chosen to allow your auto insurance company to use a tracking device on your phone or vehicle
in order to get a price discount? If so, what has been your experience?

They ding you for every little minor driving conditions. Ex: quick stops, fast acceleration, etc. just every little thing to be able to charge you more.

Wow. That's worse than I thought. Is it on your phone?

I had the one that plugged into the OBD port in 1995… will never use one again. I had a car slam on brakes in front of me which in turn I had to also… yep, I got a hard hit just from that… took it out and told them where they could put it and why.

I tried that as well a few years ago and it did not work out. I was in West Texas, where the speed limit was 80 and I stayed below the speed limit, but got dinged because I was going more than seventy

I have one from State Farm (drive safe and save) and it seems to be very intuitive. As long as I keep my speed at 5 over or less it doesn't gig me for speeding. It rates each trip with 5 bars ranging from poor to average to great. I have yet to get less than 4 bars on any category and I mostly get 5 bars. Categories are: acceleration, braking, cornering, speeding and phone distraction. My discount is only $76.00 for a 6-month period, so I'm wondering if it is really worth it.

Yes, for $12 a month less it does not seem to be worth it.

Insurance should be about one thing and one thing only: claims. If you don't have any, it's none of their business how you drive.

The USAA phone app for this is terrible. It doesn't penalize you, but basically no one actually gets the discount after the initial learning period. You can not use your phone at all for anything, and neither can anyone else in the car (even hands free). If someone pulls in front of you or slams on the breaks and you react properly, you are given a negative note. Speed limit data is not accurate in many locations. Oh and it tracks every single trip you make anywhere. I ditched it within the first week. 10% discount is not worth even trying to play their games.

I don't see how this will fair well for a driver. Doing 80 on the freeway - ding. Brake hard - ding

No thanks. My insurance company (nor anyone else for that matter) just does not need to be that deep on up into my business.

@garryjohnson
I also have State Farm as my provider and recently signed up for the Drive Safe and Save for my Mustang Mach-E GT. I have not installed it yet because the vehicle is not officially on my policy and I'm waiting for that to happen before I proceed.

I'm curios about the discount though. On average how many miles do you drive a year and do you think that this has a role in the amount of discount you get? Other categories that you already mentioned not withstanding.

The only reason I ask is because I only drive around 4500 miles per year but when I tell my agent this they just say "yeah ok". It's really hard for people to believe that I drive this few of miles and I was hoping that by getting this that I would get a lower rate.

I drive around 7500 miles a year, mostly to work and back home (~30 miles). Then there is the getting groceries, gun range trips both twice monthly and then the occasional "got to get away or I'll go mad" trip. I really have no idea how they calculate the discount, but the app does give you a score for how you are driving. Right now, my score is 91, but I'm not sure that has any bearing on my discount.

My dad had this with Allstate. Old man, drives slow, safe as more than anyone yet in Chicago the traffic lights go from green to red in milli seconds so he go nailed on hard braking. Rate went up and he cussed the agent out asking if he should not stop and just hit them.
By the way, if you don't get they insurance provided program.... Ford and Jeep I know and am guessing others do is that they sell your info to anyone and your insurance already knows. Most rigs have built in cellular or tap your phone via bluetooth. With Ford and Jeep it took me many calls and a lot of time to opt out. You can do it, problem is when you finally get a human on the phone they have no clue what you're asking for. Need to keep asking for a supervisor until you get someone that knows
