Today, while driving the 2025 Maverick home, I went down a steep hill (20% grade) near my house, and the truck seemed to be holding itself back (it felt like braking). I have not had this happen before. Has anyone else experienced this?

In your manual - suggest thumbing thru it to be somewhat familiar.

WHAT IS HILL DESCENT CONTROL

Hill descent control allows the driver to set and maintain vehicle speed while descending steep slopes in various surface conditions.

Besides what has already been said, Your profile says you have a hybrid. Regen happens when descending hills, and if the battery is full charged it will engine brake.

Good point.

Because gently quietly going down a hill and then suddenly the ICE is rev'ing at 4000 RPM is still disconcerting to me when it happens - since very infrequent.

That's not really described in the manual that way!

We travel to mountain areas a lot. When going down hills, if you have the Hybrid, its charging of the battery. If its a long enough hill or decline, when the battery is at full, you feel the resistance stop and all of sudden you are in need of using the break. First time that happened was a little shock to the system.

Strange - you didn't have the engine spun up really loud?

That can't brake as much as the regen can, but I had it still keep the speed on some surprising slopes.
Or maybe it was the 4500 RPM was so loud that was surprising, and I forgot I was braking also!

We drive the hybrid truck in normal mode. So as soon as the truck starts going down a decline, its all electric without any braking and the meter thing on the left shows battery charging.

Normal, Slippery, Eco - does not matter (maybe not tow/sport modes either).
They would all have reacted the same - yes it would show charging the battery when coasting.
And if more slowdown is needed, any mode would top out the needle at full recharge.

But actually, even when the battery is charged as full as allowed, it will show that same thing - but instead the engine will be spun up for engine braking to waste the electrical that can't be used.

Normally that RPM is kinda high if you have a good decline - maybe yours isn't that steep, so the ICE RPM isn't that high for you to notice.
Or you are so steep the ICE waste isn't enough to hold speed - but that should be such a loud RPM.

But my point is - when that is spun up, the same regen braking Hill Descent Control should be happening, keeping you at speed.
You said yours seems to let go and you have to press the brakes.

Is that press the brakes and stay in the Green Regen area?
Or you are pressing hard enough that if you were looking at EV Coach it would show the actual brake pads are being used?
Even then - charge is happening and the ICE would be spun up.

Also - if the decline isn't steep enough anymore, it stops Hill Descent Control - so it will feel like you've been let go, and only the normal regen will occur, which can still feel like free coasting almost.
But even then - charge is still happening and the ICE would be spun up.

I was just curious if you had an issue, based on your description.
You might notice next time on some descents. With radio off.
