APM was definitely bad, but the issue goes a lot deeper than that.
According to the window sticker and build sheet, my truck was spec’d with the “AM/FM stereo w/6 speakers” setup. It’s not the base audio system — it includes the subwoofer package. During troubleshooting, they discovered there are actually two additional tweeter speakers installed in the rear seat area. You can even see the mounting locations and the speakers themselves with a flashlight.
The problem is that there appears to be a different APM designed to supply more power for configurations with those additional speakers, but my truck was not originally spec’d with that setup. Their current theory is that the extra speakers may have been installed by mistake from the factory.
Using Ford’s diagnostic software through OBD, they can disable the rear tweeters and the audio system works normally. If they enable the rear tweeters but disable the front tweeters, it also works. However, when both front and rear tweeters are enabled simultaneously, the audio system fails and they can generate an error code consistently.
I asked whether this could potentially be modified using FORScan and my own cable, but they said no. I have not independently confirmed that yet, but wanted to share what I know so far.
I’m getting the truck back today, but they are continuing to work with Ford engineering to determine whether both sets of tweeters can be enabled properly, or whether the truck would require a different APM entirely. At the same time, they are hesitant to install a different APM since that hardware was never part of the original build specification.
Right now they are still trying to determine whether the root cause is simply insufficient power output from the current APM, or something else entirely. They also do not yet know whether the additional speakers contributed to the original APM failure. Engineering is supposedly investigating that further.
At least at this point they’ve isolated the issue that was causing the complete loss of audio control and the non-functional volume controls.
Edit:
I just google search the lariat luxury package for 2022 which I have and it does specify 8 speakers. So I’m going to call them back.
