That's cheap! A house that's full of mold, and falling apart is $1.2 million here, ain't nobody without a silver spoon in their hands at birth buying a house without a mortgage.
True, but at least you have free healthcare. Down here in the land of the "free" we don't believe in "free stuff," so most folks pay well over $1000 a month for health insurance. (Some have it partially or wholly subsidized by their employers, through.)

Most of us never had a car payment until we bought our first nice car, new or used. The first car payment I ever had was when I bought my first new car, a 1979 Pinto, while in my late 20's.
Yeah, I get that, but the person I was responding to said they already had at least two cars... My first "loan" was to purchase a motorcycle to take with me to college. Worked overtime all summer to have it paid off before the school year started, and did. Three days later, it was stolen. And that was the first time I cried as an "adult."

Other than that, I agree with the rest of your post while understanding that some of us didn't get much financial education until we learned it the hard way.
Yeah, this amazes me. I made sure all my kids at least got the chance to do Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University." I don't agree with everything he teaches, but it's pretty sound on the fundamentals. I really wish this type of course was taught at the high-school level, and was mandatory for everyone.

I was fortunate enough to have a father who made a comfortable life for us on very little income (pastor and missionary). He taught me a lot about finances, because he "made me" do the family "books" as a teenager. (I realize now it was one of the best things he ever did for me, but at the time I wasn't thrilled.) I knew exactly why I couldn't have a new pair of sneakers, or why my brother didn't get to take guitar lessons - we simply couldn't afford it. I also watched the "emergency fund" grow to the point where I resented it (we didn't even have a TV in our house, but had almost $1500 in that darn emergency fund), and then saw the reason for having it when the transmission on Dad's car (an early 50's VW "Combi" van) seized up and had to be rebuilt. Suddenly it all made sense!

" BUILD BACK BETTER" not even in full swing yet, sleepy Joe wants another 4 years to " Finish the Job" better grab 5.5% if you can, my son took delivery of his at the end of April with a credit union interest rate of 10%, granted it was his first new vehicle and major loan purchase so he doesn't have a well established credit rating yet. But double digit rates may become the norm in the near future if this keeps up.

While not Dave's program specifically, Alabama now requires a basic financial literacy class for graduation. It was optional when I graduated and barely scratched the surface. The Boy Scouts also require Personal Management for Eagle and my son's and daughter's troops teach them on a regular basis by people who are in the financial sector.

But as a whole, I've been browbeating my kids to stay out of debt. A working 2005 Ford F-150 gets you to work just as easily as a 2023 Tesla for a fraction of the cost. And a 1,700 sq ft house in a moderate neighborhood still keeps you cool during the summer.

Darn few working people can afford to pay cash for a home. Nowadays, even "started homes" are over $200K... Within 80 miles of my present home, there are ZERO listings below $125K - and those are "fixer uppers" that need $50-$100K of work to be habitable.

It's Nice that you're wealthy enough, or have a job that pays enough to make you the exception, but I suspect one would have to earn well over $100K for "cash" ownership of a home to be even a remote possibility. By the time you pay rent, utilities, transportation, food, etc. there just isn't enough left over to save enough to buy a house outright... My social-worker daughter is going through this realization right now, as she's trying to find some way she can buy a home.
I wish a starter home around me were only 200k. A starter 2 bedroom apartment is closer to double that. Then add another $600-800 a month for HOA fees. 😞

The interest rate environment will probably be less salient to most buyers for MY24 than the MSRP increase, unless you're a person with no credit history and get a double digit loan rate. Right now rates are about 2% higher on average over the last 10 years vs an msrp bump that will likely be a few thousand.

The least expensive dwelling within 10 miles of my current residence is currently listed for $329K (it's a 1000 sq ft condo, with an "unspecified" HOA fee - I didn't ask). Second place is a $479K home that is 1200 sq ft on a roughly 3200 sq ft lot. But if you drive a good bit farther, you can find serious fixer-upppers (read "dumps") for somewhere in the mid-250s. I would hate to be starting out my working life in this area... Apartments are all people can afford, and they jack the rates every year by at least 15-20%. It won't be long before even apartments are not an option!

Anyone else looking at interest rates and considering not purchasing their Maverick? I have a June 12 build date and at this point the lowest interest rates I've seen are 5.5% which is crazy! I have two different trade in scenarios 2020 Soul ($5000 profit) OR 2017 Jetta (KBB $13k - all profit). Either way I'm sitting at a $430-$580 a month payment on a $30k truck. Maybe it's because I've never had a truck payment but that just seems very high to me.

Truck build, nothing special. Inlaws have property/cattle we're starting to get involved with so needed a few extras.

Car payment statistics
The average monthly car payment for new cars is $716. The average monthly car payment for used cars is $526. 39.5 percent of vehicles financed in the fourth quarter of 2022 were new vehicles. 60.5 of percent of vehicles financed in the fourth quarter of 2022 were used vehicles.

I have the cash for My 23 but it can't leave the dealer because of a stop sale on a wire harness for the trailer which has nothing to do with the truck. Been over 65 days now left outside in the dealer lot, Ford doesn't care and frankly I don't either. They give me great doubts about their recall repairs, going to go in another direction

The number of people calling normal interest rates "crazy" is too dang high. What's crazy is almost 0% rates for over a decade.

And at $30k the monthly payment difference between 5.5% and 1% is only about $60. As they say, "if you have to ask you can't afford it "
My parents bought their first ever new car in 1987. It had no power anything. The only options were rear window defroster, and fm radio. Didn't even have AC.

18.9% Interest rate. They still have the paperwork. Kept that car 16 years. It was my car as a teenager. I remember replacing the engine. Paid $100 for a used one at a junk yard in the late 90s.

Mines got a build date of 6/16, ordered during the 2022 order window, XL hybrid with tow hitch, buying it cash and taking it straight to carmax or having it picked up by carvana from the dealer lot for a 9k profit!

A true "safety" issue I can understand, I've seen this as a tech for many recalls such as airbags, fuel leaks, seatbelts, etc., but Ford should be allowed to deliver you a truck with an inoperative trailer lighting connector if you agree to sign a delivery statement documenting that you are aware of the problem and will not be towing with the vehicle until the issue is resolved and the recall closed. This is in no way a safety issue of the operation of the vehicle stand alone, only if and when towing. At the most extreme the dealership should be allowed to remove your hitch and deliver your vehicle . I'm not sure who made the decision on this delivery hold but I'm thinking it's NHTSA or Ford themselves, in either case a little common sense would go a long ways.
