What is the antenna on the roof used for? Also how do I remove it to put on a car cover?

The antenna antenna or the whole sharkfin assembly itself? The former just unscrews and is used for the radio. The base isn't readily removable.

Maybe just unscrew and replace the factory antenna mast with a short stubby mast. This one is only 1.38 inches.

I have the Cravenspeed stubby and it works great. I've read a lot of complaints about these knockoff ones. I'd probably spend the extra $15.

I wonder if a longer antenna would improve reception. I don't care enough about listening to bother with recordings, so live radio is my item of choice. A bit stronger reception would be useful to me, and I don't care about 'the look'.

I also have the Cravenspeed stubby antenna (to avoid hitting the Yakima Rocketbox on the shell's racks), and it works great.

Normally a properly designed antenna that is full size and on top of the vehicle provides the best reception.

It's hilly here in Missouri, even in the city -- more so out of town, which affects reception, so I thought I'd replace my stubby with the original to improve reception. Over two weeks, it made no difference -- even in the city, so I went back to the stubby.
