For those interested in wireless Android Auto, "Motorola" has just announced a dongle to add it. I might check it out at some point.

The Motorola MA1 is a dongle for wireless Android Auto - The Verge
I'm going to look into that.

But also, has anyone successfully used a magnetic charging/data cable with Android Auto? And if so, what brand?

(By "magnetic charging/data cable" I mean one of those that has a magnetic insert that you put into the USB port on the phone so you can just click the cable to the phone magnetically instead of having to insert it in the port.)

I've had some issues with Android Auto on my fiance's car (2021 Honda HRV). I reset my phone (Samsung Note 20 Ultra) and it worked fine after that.

I honestly think it has more to do with the AndroidAuto software, more than anything else.

Since the new version of Android Auto won't play nice with the over the air radio is totally useless. I can use a phone holder and run navigation on the phone.

Android Auto has been great when it works. It's smooth, easy to use, and I can do mostly everything I want.

But I am semi-frequently running into issues. Lots of cases where it refuses to work until I reconnect. One time it worked perfectly, except I couldn't control it through the steering wheel (media controls). Another thing that happened once was navigation showed me as driving through buildings and was all fucked up until I got out from underneath the expressway and onto it.

Still prefer over last car which was just bluetooth audio take it or leave it.

I just submitted their "registration". Says it will be available at the end of the month.
Received the invite this morning. They are using Amazon for distribution. Completed the order on Amazon. Says they start shipping 1/28/22. Profit.

Same here, I've used android auto in 2 other cars and they all do the same thing regardless of cord im using. This is why I think it may be my phone.
We have a 2018 Honda CRV. Using Bluetooth, Android Auto works for phone conversations, which I rarely use in the car. Usually I can listen to music stored on my phone, but it's fluky. Google maps doesn't seem to be available on my Android Auto. 'Have never been able to connect through the designated USB data port - with multiple cables and two different phones. I'm glad thus is not important to me.

Oh. And please don't ask me "Have you tried ......?"

First review I've seen of the MA1. Looks to work pretty well:
Motorola MA1 review: Wireless Android Auto on your terms (androidpolice.com)
Interesting review... thanks.

One thing, though... The review says that you need Android 11.0 to wirelessly connect to Android Auto through this dongle. That's generally true, but the Motorola specifications page refers you to Google's AA web page for more detailed specs. And Google's specifications include more phones.
A compatible Android phone with an active data plan, 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and the latest version of the Android Auto app. Wireless projection is compatible with these Android versions:
-Any phone with Android 11.0
-A Google or Samsung phone with Android 10.0
-A Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, or Note 8, with Android 9.0
I hope they are right, because I ordered one of these and I'm running Android 10 on a Samsung phone.

Android Auto, and CarPlay to a lesser extent, is largely phone based, with minimal software on the Headunit. Due to this, the make and model ( quality) of the phone, as well as the available RAM and condition of the OS on your phone have HUGE impacts on AA's stability. Higher end phones will have better processors, less adware, less rooted BS programs, and more memory to handle the data transfer for AA. This as well as a high quality, well built cable (the manufacturers cable is ideal) will improve the experience greatly. The radio's software could be playing a role, but it is MUCH more likely your phone, and/or an Android OS issue. Apple CarPlay had MAJOR issues on several recent updates, but eventually was patched. Android OS has had similar issues in some past updates, but they are all eventually patched. Ensure you have Your phone properly paired with the radio both in Bluetooth and with AA permissions. Also ensure you location settings are on on your phone, and check the permissions within the Android Auto app on your phone and in your phone settings. If none of that fixes its, try re-installing rebooting your phone ( sometimes the phone just needs a kick in the OS pants), then re-install Android Auto, then if that doesnt work, reboot the radio.

In summary --> Update phone, make sure you use a good cable, make sure AA is up to date and your permissions are all properly set before you do anything with the radio itself. If none of that works, wait for patch from Android and/or Ford.

Don't know if its been discussed, but Android Auto is being transitioned out. Google's new "Assistant Driving Mode is actually similar to the old Android Auto experience for Phone Screens, which was discontinued with Android 12."
I still find Driving Mode confusing and glitchy on both the Maverick and our Crosstrek Sport.
Search "google assistant driving mode" for more info.

About the new $99 Motorola wireless Android Auto adapter...
Note that the phone's battery will discharge, unlike with a plugged-in phone.
