Hey everyone. Google has added incident reporting to Google Maps on Android Auto, but it doesn't show up on AA in the Maverick due to a frustrating design constraint, the 2022-24 Maverick's small screen. Incident reporting on Google Maps for AA allows drivers to send in a report for road hazards found along their route, such as construction, closed lanes, accidents, speed traps, etc. The Maverick's screen doesn't have enough vertical space, so the button doesn't appear. Incident reporting is accessed by a "hazard" button along the left side of the screen underneath the north point view, and above the zoom buttons. Since the Maverick's screen isn't tall enough to show all the buttons, the incident reporting button is removed. The incident reporting button shows up for me in Google Maps on my phone (I saw it when using Google Maps for navigation while riding my motorcycle), but noticed that the incident reporting button missing in Google Maps on Android Auto in the Maverick. I didn't know why until I read this article: Android Auto’s incident reporting feature might not work in your car – here’s why.

The fix is to change the DPI using an AAWireless adapter Here’s how to get more space for widgets on Android Auto ‘Coolwalk’. I own the adapter and changed the DPI from default "0", to 110, and that fixed the issue. In my Maverick, changing the DPI to 110 results in Android Auto showing Google Maps as a wide, fully-functional app at the top of the display with widgets below, instead of on the right side. It shows the weather widget that’s missing for most users of “Coolwalk” and also the music widget off to the bottom right side. Notably, that weather widget gets replaced by any recent messages you might receive. When I make Google Maps full screen, the incident reporting button shows up. Check out the pics below.

Just tried this and it worked. Thank you! Hopefully there will be an update that allows this to work at normal resolution, but this is good until then.

Awesome!
Thanks for the post. I've had my AA wireless for a year or so now and never thought to try this.

Love that it makes that bar at the bottom smaller, works great with my Fermata auto as well.

I use Waze and just use voice commands to report hazards etc. I'm sure if Google Maps don't have that yet they soon will.

"report vehicle on shoulder" etc.

Waze reporting voice commands here

If I tried to do that with physical touches I would be getting reported as a hazard on road.

Very cool! Now if it only worked me with mine. "You cannot do this on the Motorola MA1, as that device has no companion app at all."

I tried it, but things get so tiny on the screen at that setting, I was afraid I'd be squinting at it while I was driving.

Setting it to 150 DPI gets you the reporting icon, while still looking mostly like the passthrough setting. I prefer that, personally, even if it means I don't get the extra weather app on the screen in multi window mode.

So the 150 setting makes it appear larger? I'll have to give it a shot and see if I like it more.

From what I can tell and what I can guess, it looks like the height and width are reported in pixels, along with the DPI (dots/pixels per inch). Combine those and Android Auto itself must be deriving the screen size in inches.

Have the AAWireless dongle lie and decrease the DPI, and the physical screen must be larger (same pixels need more space). Increase the DPI, and the physical screen must be smaller (same pixels crammed together). Whatever the dongle is reporting, it doesn't change the actual screen, but its tricking Android Auto into thinking it's a different size so Maps sends something different, then the adapter scales what it gets so it can display.

I'm guessing that 0 just means default, which must equate to about 160 (by eyeball). So 150 means your screen must be a little larger than what it normally reports, with room for more icons in Maps, but not so large to change the overall look much. 110, though, makes Android Auto think your screen must be tablet-sized, with room for a lot more stuff - but all that stuff looks tiny on the small Maverick screen.

I tried a bunch of settings from 90 to 160, and got a lot of different looks. You could try the same (while you're parked!) - it just takes the adapter a few seconds to reset, so you can try one or two settings a minute to find what looks good.

Thanks to groovesocket for finding that setting, I hadn't touched any of those options before!

Yes, I changed my DPI from 110 to 150 and it makes the apps appear larger.

Also confirming- I changed to 150 and to my eye it looks like OEM or close enough to not make a difference. Definitely a winner!

This is great information and a great post on Android Auto DPI scaling on the Maverick via Wireless dongles to get the incident reporting feature to show up. In case you were wondering about the AAWireless devices described above as I was, I've summed them up below:

Currently there are two versions of the AAWireless adapter. Both are on Amazon only (maybe on EBay?) currently. The AAWireless TWO is as of this post sold out.

The first is the original which is square in shape. It works just fine and will continue to get updates as it is not much different from the AAWireless TWO. There is a $5 difference between the two devices.

The AAWireless TWO is rectangular in shape with a button on the case. It is the newer version and is basically the same except you can hit the button to switch phones that are paired with it, instead of having to go into the settings and such. The AAWireless TWO does not support Apple Carplay (yet).
