Is the all-wheel-drive the same in the XL, XLT, lariat, and FX4 packages? I know the tremor has a locking differential, but is there really any difference with the others? Does anybody know?I’m Not meaning a lift either, but the AWD system itself. Same PTU systems etc.
thanks

All Ecoboost trims have the same exact AWD system obviously except for the Tremor. Same RDU, same ptu. You do get some different drive modes with fx4 but they can be added with Forscan. You can also look up my experience adding hill descent control to an XL AWD

Correct , and the ptu is air cooled in all models except tremor which is water cooled, and rear diff in tremor is different by having the twin clutch lockable electric focus RS unit , along with the larger axles /cv’s.

I find putting my EcoB XL into TOW mode provides excellent braking on steep hills.

lockable as in a multi-plate clutch pack fully energizes and stays that way until it gets too hot, or you push the button again.

not a sliding pin, which is what people familiar with 4WD trucks and SUVs might assume.

Be the first to report a Tremor PTU over heating 😁

I'm sure it would if you push the button and drive around on dry pavement.

It should have a sensor and turn off the lock before any real damage is done, though. Unlike a traditional 4WD transfer case or locking rear/front differential, which lets the driver know with binding and burning smells. :ROFLMAO:

No, I haven't heard of any over heating either. But I have seen broken rear lockers and personally had a F150 bound up so bad front to rear I couldn't disengage 4WD, no locker.

The rear differential lock in my Tremor will be illuminated in an amber color when in use however if you go over a set speed the icon will turn Gray and will be in stand by mode and release the rear lock you are still driving. I already did this by accident while driving on the high way The 4 wheel lock is another story and should not be used on dry pavement. That too has a stand by mode however the manual makes it very clear that over heating and damage will occur.

The rear e-lock on my F-150 was similar - when you reached a certain speed, it would unlock. A clutch-based locker, I presume. The transfer case, however, was a hard mechanical lock. Electrically controlled, but mechanical path.
