I am posting this because it may help others that may run into the same issue I had with new TPMS for my 2025. I recently picked up a very slightly used winter tire/wheel set off of marketplace. The seller had previously purchased them for his wife’s 2024 Escape PHEV, which for whatever reason, they traded in on a Rivian, hence why they were selling them. As I suspected, the wheels had 315mhz sensors, and the 2025 requires 433mhz. I purchased a set of TPMS from Rockauto and swapped them into the wheels. The TPMS are BH Sens brand and advertised as preprogrammed, only needing to do a relearn procedure. This is where my frustration began, as I could not get the new TPMS activated. I was entering relearn mode by turning on the ignition and pressing the hazard button 6 times. The horn would honk and the display would indicate to train the front left sensor first. I have a Ford TPMS19 activation tool, and held it near the valve stem, and nothing, I then tried all the wheels, by reentering learn mode and treating them all as the front left tire, still nothing. I thought maybe my old TPMS activation tool maybe didn’t work with 433mhz sensors? I rolled over one of the OEM wheels and tried the relearn again on that wheel, and the horn honked, indicating the tool works. After some online research, I then tried the “letting air out of the tire” during training mode, and still nothing. Then I tried “letting air out of the tire” while simultaneously pressing the button on the activation tool, and still nothing.

Moving on, someone had suggested the sensors needed to be woken up first, by driving the vehicle, and that they may even “pair” up on their own, but they did not. After driving long enough to trigger the TPMS error light, I returned home, and tried all of the procedures listed above, again nothing. I was getting ready to initiate a return to Rockauto, when I thought I would scour the interwebs again for a possible solution. I came across a post on a Ford Transit forum where someone was having the same issues I was having, but eventually was successful. The poster wrote that they had heard from a Ford technician that the entering “relearn” mode using the hazard button method, was only for relearning the positions of already “paired” TPMS sensors, and that one has to enter the relearn mode thru combinations of brake pedal press and ignition on/off, in order to activate new sensors. I thought, WTH, I’ll give that a try, and BAM, they all paired right away with the activation tool.

So, for anyone else having a difficult time “learning” new TPMS sensors to a 2025, you need to use the relearn mode thru “combinations of brake pedal press and ignition on/off”, and not the “hazard button” method. Even though the display looks the same while doing it both ways, they are apparently different.

For those curious what the “combinations of brake pedal press and ignition on/off” method is, these are the steps:

  • With the ignition off, press and hold the brake pedal for 3 seconds and release
  • Turn the ignition on and then off 3 times, ending with the ignition on
  • Next, press and hold the brake pedal for 3 seconds and release again
  • Next, turn the ignition off, followed by turning the ignition on and then off 3 times, ending with the ignition on, and the horn should honk and the display should show the relearn procedure and indicate to train the front left tire first
Sorry for the long post, but I wish I had known this when I started, as it would have saved me a lot of frustration. Hopefully, this will help someone who runs into the same issue.

I thought these newer systems automatically picked up the new positions when you rotated your tires? So yeah, strange that the learn mode is for that, and not for new sensors.

When I ordered my TPMS 19 reset/relearn device from Amazon, it came with the brake pedal / ignition on-off procedure on a sheet of paper. Worked well with my winter tires - steelies - TPMS117 combo for my 2025 Maverick as well as the g/f's 2024 Escape ST-Line with winter tires - Escape steelies - OE TPMS sensors....

Note that when I got my TPMS117's off eBay, seller took them off a set of 2024 Bronco Sport rims that he had.

I bought a set of steelies w/o sensors for A/T tires, bought TPMS sensors. Shop said they wouldn't reset them since I didn't buy them from them. The sensors relearned automaticaly. Same when I put the stock 19's back on.

Must be a 2025 thing My 2023 had zero issue with rock Auto tpm's . Did nothing they read after a few miles. Zero issue . So must be on newer 2025 its a problem. Oh I have rotated the tires and no need to do anything they see where they are all on their own.

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and for posting these instructions. While those responding did not need them, I am sure there are those that will.

Thanks very much, the 2025 info has been hard to get straight. I am unsure whether my "new" used winters are getting picked up automagically, or whether it's still in a hold and bullshit mode. They were purchased for a Bronco Sport by seller, and may or may not have 433 tpms in that speaks Ford.

However, I had already got in 4x TPMS-117 from Eastgate Ford Parts, with the expectation that I wouldn't find compatible TPMS in used rims, probably going to need to put those in when my Mav makes it clear whether it is getting real TPMS info or not.

Was actually going a bit nuts the other day digging through menus and settings in Sync4 and on dash, because I swear I read there was a relearn force in there somewhere, but apparently not.

When and where ever you get your TPMS - please make sure you replace the valve stems as well if your TPMS purchase does not include them.

I just had some spare Blizzacks remounted onto steelies for my Mav. the rims came w/ no TPMS so I bought a set from Tirerack. NTB installed them & performed the relearn procedure on them & everything has been working great.

Yes, the Maverick’s system will normally see the sensors correctly after rotation, and this procedure is not normally necessary. I’m guessing it’s used as a sort of “soft reset” when something goes awry.

Lengthy posts such as this that are clear and precise are well worth reading! Thanks for further educating me on this process!

Well this didn't work. I got the "stop safely now" after trying this. Now the ignition turns on, but no ready light and no drive. Going to leave it it 30 minutes and try again.

I just swapped my 2025 Lariat wheels for some 2025 XLT wheels with the stock TPMS and I didn't need to do anything. The truck recognized it right away.
