I agree with you regarding air density. But I tested, they are AC vents. After that I did a quick research, this solution is not new. BMW and Audi, for example, use it.Heater vent? Hot air rises, cold air falls. Most modern low end vehicles rely on front AC vents to cool rear seat area - unless there are separate vents in back of front console. My 2013 Jeep has that. Can't say for sure this is how Maverick does it since I don't have mine quite yet to verify.
Turn on your AC and put your hand down there and see if cold air comes out?
