I just keep thinking to myself, how long before the thing brakes in my pocket and then it won't stay shut. I'm thinking this because my keys are in my pocket 8+ hours a day. Seems like an odd design.
These keys have been used for years. If it breaks it just won't pop open with force. If it breaks, usually it's a quick fix with a spring replacement.

The switchblade keyfob is by far my least favorite feature of my truck. When it's open it's too big, and I find it tends to open in my pocket quite frequently.
I have an 06 Mazda 6 with a similar fib, and the mechanism is worn enough that it opens even more easily. But at least that fob isn't so big when closed.
My wife's 10 Honda CRV also has the key fob /key combined, but it doesn't fold and the fob portion is barely larger than a regular key. That is what I really want.

It's a simple spring-loaded device from Ford (but other manufacturers have used similar designs for a long time), not a 007 gadget from Q.

Can't comment on the Ford switchblade keys but on my 2014 Chevy equinox switchblade keys both keys have held up for a decades use and going strong.

Then, I guess you'll come to a stop.

Edit: Of course some quick Google search shows that Ford flip keys commonly fail and need to be replaced. Might even be common across the industry for these flip blade keys. The pin that flips the key it has a tendency to break. Hmm
Hmm
If you're really that worried about it, or if you don't like having the fob in your pocket for 8+ hrs a day, just get a cheap metal fob-less key made for the door lock.

My local locksmith made a metal one before she tried to cut the extra fob I bought on Amazon. Once she determined her machine could cut a key for the Maverick, she cut the one attached to the new fob. I then programmed the new fob & paired it to the truck, myself. She just gave me the metal key, no charge.
