I agree with that matter for concern... but ALSO - why do this? I don't see any esthetic value / appeal whatsoever... before you fire that response back at me... to each their own!? Also I like the way that so many folks here online "get into" all of these modifications... though I am focused on keeping mine stock, for future reasons.
Personally couldn’t care less if it’s “approved” as my state won’t give a crap. As for modifying things, why not? I don’t like a stock truck/car as it’s the same as everyone else that has one. I like to be different. I don’t buy a car, especially a $24k truck for future reasons. It’s not going to appreciate so I’m going to make it my own and enjoy it while I own it

I replaced my halogen third brake lamp with a fully LED unit. The installation was pretty straight forward. The only tools I needed for this were: T20 Torx bit, small pry tools, and an X-Acto hobby knife. I had to modify the connector on the new light just slightly. Overall, I'm very happy with new look. The look and feel of the new light is very comparable to stock despite only costing $33. I've previously purchased aftermarket replacement lighting that I could just tell were cheap, knock-offs, this doesn't seem like that at all. I'll update here if any issues arise though.

Here's the exact light that I used which has a chrome housing w/ clear lens: LED Third Brake Lights Cargo Lamp Center High Cap Mount Tail Light Chrome Housing

They also have a black housing w/ clear lens: LED Third Brake Lights Cargo Lamp Center High Cap Mount Tail Light Black Housing

Or a chrome housing w/ red & clear lens for an OEM appearance: LED Brake Light Compatible For Ford F-150 Super Duty Clear & Red Lens

This particular light looks to be VRacing brand but I think they're all the same to be honest. There were similar options on eBay for a few dollars less that looked identical.

New vs. original

The light came with a new gasket that I pre-applied to the back of the housing, this is shown below:

After removing the OEM light, you'll need to release a tab to gain access to the connector. The tab is identified below. I was able to carefully press this down and use a small pry tool to release it. This would likely be much easier and safer to access if you simply dropped the rear of the headliner down. I probably should have went that route as I could have easily punctured/damaged the headliner by trying to skip a step.
View attachment 23185

After removing the OEM light, I realized that the connectors vary slightly in that the guides are mirrored (luckily the wires are oriented correctly). The arrow points to the guide that I had to remove.
View attachment 23174

I used a hobby knife to trim this guide away. I scored it on each side then carefully cut through the remainder. This allowed to new light to be connected.

These pictures were taken in complete darkness, no garage lighting. I also just have the base Lariat, so no bed lighting, this is just the new third brake light illumination.

Editing to add Alternate OEM Ford option:

I actually found my old OEM LED Third Brake Lamp from my F150. Here it is with the OEM Halogen Maverick light for comparison. This would be another option if someone wanted to stay OEM but upgrade to fully LED. Install would be the same and the connector would require the same modification.

I found a couple of additional options that look to be true plug-and-play, as in no modification required to the connector.

Nice mod, something I would consider. One question: how do you control the "Cargo light" function? I really like that and can see that being very useful at night.

What a waste of a post.. just because YOU don't see any value, doesn't mean others have to share that same concept. Why are you always posting on OTHER people's posts mocking their choice to modify and make their Maverick unique? The Maverick was made to customize and enjoy.

We get it, you're not touching yours for "future reasons", cool, move along. Lemme guess, you're also not giving it to your wife because you want to keep her tight for when you hand her off down the line.. come on guy.

Thanks! Is that the same as the DRL? I was literally just going through the drivers manual trying to find a description. Very handy feature.

No. Cargo lights illuminate the bed. They come on when you unlock the truck or when you push the button. DRL are forward facing lights that illuminate when you’re driving

This looks good and I love mods, but my plan is to keep it simple and just replace the current bulbs with LED and be done with it. But I so much love seeing what folks come up with and do to these sweet Mav's. :)

Nice! About the only improvement I could think of would be to have a clear one in a "switchback" design, in which the entire thing goes red as a third brake light to make it more noticeable, and whole thing goes white for lighting.

By the way there are "Reading comprehension courses" you might want to discover... once you exit Kindergarten...

That's what I did - replaced the white cargo bulbs with LEDs, and I like the brightness, but I may do the OP's mod anyway because i prefer the OP's lens without the red center part. Nice write up and photos.
