3D Printing ?

What resolution do I ask for?

  • Low Resolution (0.28mm)
  • Standard Resolution (0.2mm)
  • High Resolution (0.12mm)
  • Ultra Resolution (0.08mm)
What level of infill? 0% to 100%

Library has a printer. I'm just trying to learn what settings to ask for. For material I'm planning to use ECO-ABS. They also offer PETG and PLA.

ABS and PETG are going to hold up to heat better. I 3D printer a 90 mount for a ring camera and it's been subjected up to 110F outside and held up. No change in color, or discoloration so far.

PLA will likely warp in your car. So it might be good for stuff inside and around the house. It's also a bit more brittle so even if it doesn't warp, you might have it snap depending on your design/printing.

For settings, I'd suggest researching what the filament manufacturer suggests and then see how others with your printer are doing with that filament and settings. I've always just left the Cura resolution to standard. You also may want to research what your specific printer supports.

I would recommend 0.2mm resolution with 3 outer shells and at least 3 solid layers on the top and bottom. For infill, you would probably be ok between 25 and 50%. The design is pretty thin, so the infill may not matter, it may just print the solid layers and not need the infill.
As for material, ABS is STRONG, but doesn't always flex the best. PETG is a little more springy. Again, with the thinness of this design, it probably won't matter. I would not recommend PLA for this application.

I printed these yesterday and they are a perfect fit. There was a thread a while back where someone had mentioned hauling some pea gravel and some got into their tailgate through these openings and it rattled every time they would close the tailgate. I found this file on a Facebook group with the link to Thingiverse. Printed in Black PETG and took right at an hour. Very practical print and I have not seen anything like this being sold aftermarket.

This is the link if anyone wants to print it themselves.

Not sure what settings or plastic or whatever my brother used but I think they came out nicely and snapped into placed like they were OEM.

Awesome design. Nice upgrade for free!

I printed mine in PETG at 100% infil at a .2 resolution.

I did 3 layer wall height top and bottom (my preference on functional parts) so the infill wasn’t really a concern because the structural part of the print is 10 layers or so.

This is awesome - I was the original guy who did the load of gravel and had it all up in my tailgate :) I just downloaded these and sent them off to print!! Thank you!

How about
Ya know what would be great is someone to print a storage box that fits in the cubby behind the bottle holder. A spring loaded cubby box would be great to stash your wallet and stuff in when you go to the beach and no one could see it. I was thnking of making one out of sheet metal to keep my pistol in when I am travelng but I carry a S&W Python which is a bit big for that unless it is really thin metal. A skeletonized frame though would be good with a spring latch ?? Just brainstorming here sorry.
How about modifying the access door to be hidden hinged and use the hole to access the release trigger? Have to grind screws off and weld screw heads in place. Could get some rifles in there.

Did you have the tailgate assist cylinder?

Thanks, Kris Kelley, for posting these files. I had a local community group 3D print them for me and they fit perfectly! It cost me a whopping $2.45 (and that's Cdn) And they did it in a colour very close to my Cactus Grey....real bonus!

I will pay for time, product, shipping, box, label etc. Don’t have 3D printer, just want awesome product!
dont know what its like where you live but here in Northeast Ohio most library systems/college libraries and some high schools have at least one 3D printer for public use. you are charged a minimal price for the cost of the filiment and you have to do some upfront homework to make sure that your 3D print file is in a format compatable with their equipment.
havnt tried it personally but it is probably the way i'll go.
my issue is finding the files i would like to print.

What cubby were you referring to? There are many on the truck. Do you mean the one on the door?
yes. That one is big enough to hold my 1911 or Python but I don't take it when I travel anymore because I need to leave it in the truck and I don't like the idea of it being seen from the passenger window. I would really like something with a spring latch drawer that I could mount in the driver door pocket. I would be hidden and could be accessed easily. I am looking for some stainless steel now that I can make something. It is just difficult to form metal with compound rolls like are in that panel. I don't want to permanently alter the driver panel but that may be the best option.

That’s awesome! I haven’t tried to match the interior blue yet, but have tried a couple of orange filaments. I haven’t found the perfect match yet.
