A lot of old houses only have 100amp service, or even less. For some people, adding a new 220/240v outlet would require updating the entire breaker box, and maybe even the lines from the power pole. I had some open spots in my breaker box when I added a 220/240vac pair to the kitchen for the "dual fuel" range (gas burners and elec oven). That's the only 220/240 device we have, the dryer and hot water heater are gas. But I only went with a 120vac new line to the driveway to charge the Fiat with a level 1 charger. We really don't need more than 5 miles per hour charging for the Fiat, which gets charged overnight maybe once a week. It has a 24kWh battery module, and is good for 80-90 miles unless the heater or AC is on a lot, and that drops it by a third!

But, I like the DIY idea of just using the existing dryer or water heater outlet instead of installing a whole new line dedicated to the car for level 2; of which a 40amp would charge 30-35 miles in an hour.
Water heater should be hard wired not on a plug. Dryer or stove is an option. My electrician said he went to quote adding a level 2 and a switch for a Ford Lightening to power the house. The home was 1/4 mile back a private lane. It had a fuse box not even a breaker box and 100 amp service. When he got done quoting the new lines from the pole, box, breakers, adding in the equipment to power the house from the truck it was close to 9,000. They man decided NOT to buy the Lightening.

I’m curious if any MTC members with Slate deposits had/have the intention of having it as their only vehicle?
I actually have two deposits and have no intentions of exercising them. My Maverick exceeded my expectations. and my wife likes it! Enough said.

The Mav hybrid XL was the best thing going for my needs and expectations at the time I bought it. Still content with it, no intentions of trading it for anything else anytime soon.

That said, if the Slate and Telo and Ranchero had also been available in 2025 when I bought the Mav, I would have had a more difficult time making a decision. Probably would have ended up with the Mav hybrid anyway, because I do a 1200 mile roundtrip drive to Oregon and back every month, and ICE fuel is the way to go for that kind of driving. Given the choice of the 4 today, assuming I needed to buy a new vehicle and didn't need to do that 500 mile drive so often, I'd lean toward the Telo.

Near future; because it's economically practical, I'll likely ship the Mav over to Hawai'i to replace the old X5. I would purchase a Telo or Ranchero to be the main mainland vehicle, and keep the Transit(not Connect) as a campervan and occasional heavy hauler. The Slate seems a little bare-bones even for me, but the price would make it an option. If any of these EVs had a reasonably priced range extender engine it would be a no-brainer on which one to get. The obvious better fit for Big Island house would be the Telo or Slate, but buying something brand new for a place where we'd only be there to use it less than half the time isn't economically efficient. However, these are all pretty cheap vehicles, and I'm not going to be around forever, maybe another 10-20 years...thanks for enduring my thinking out loud.

Ford's version will be much better for $5,000 more.
I get the feeling there will be a place for both vehicles in the market, or they will both flop pretty bad.

The Ford is more of a vehicle replacement with a crew cab and likely a less spartan interior, with a lot more tech. The Slate may have it's own niche with people that really want a very spartan vehicle or all the customization options, plus its small size could make it a very popular light commercial vehicle in cities. I am interested to see how repairable the Slate is, because if it's as modular as they claim with cheap replacement parts, that would make it even more attractive for commercial work.

If that guy had Lightning kind of money he probably should have considered bringing his service into the 21st century!
We recently bought a 2027 Bolt and I was checking out my breaker box and contemplating a DIY charging setup - did some "googling" to see how much a 50 amp breaker was going to cost me and it turns out we had one of the most dangerous boxes/breakers that were ever used (Federal Pacific). The company had falsified their UL testing and their breakers were known for taking 2-3X their load rating before tripping. Thinking back that might explain the fire we had when a wall heater decided to go into overload. Got a good deal on a service change and while they were running the new wires for the EV outlet we had them put in a disconnect for our generator. Yeah we spent a little bit of money but the peace of mind and new conveniences were worth it.

at this stage of my life, i am not interested in the slate., maybe 10 years form now? but i am all for massively different options being produced. the more options, the better. the tide has turned on 80k full size trucks as family vehicles. interest rates, increased cost of everything, etc
no power windows, i don’t care, my wrangler had no power windows, grew up with crank windows, not that hard to deal with

This thing was already DOA at $20k, now at $34.5k its just laughable.

No radio, no AC, no features at all, or for $2k more you can get a truck with 4 seats, double the tow rating, no reliance on charging networks, a bluetooth enabled radio with apple carplay, cruise control, and wide support networks.

Hmmmm.....

The ironic hypocrisy here is so thick you could use it to deflect lasers.

I have a coworker with not one but THREE yugos.

He's been married for over 20 years and has 4 children.
Who said it had no AC?

Just thinking............I wonder if these will be towable behind a motorhome? Huge miss on their part if not.

Being able to charge at your site could be a big selling point...........plug your RV into 50 Amp and your truck into 30 Amp.

I'm sure campgrounds would soon catch on and charge an additional fee.

Just rambling.......
Not flat tow capable, sadly.
