It looks like Bezos said, “Let’s build a minimally viable product (MVP) to compete with the Maverick. Worst case we’ll just sell them as fleet vehicles or for Amazon deliveries.”

Just like the Hybrid Mav added AWD after 4 years, the Slate could too, as well as more range, or a crew cab version, or what ever else there is demand for.

Not a Bezos fan, but Amazon, Kindle, AWS are very good products.

And the Maverick has proven there is a market for this type of vehicle. As Mav’s get more expensive, slotting below seems like a good strategy.

1- I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that they're comparing themselves to the Maverick.
2- It's NOT under $20k- you still pay whatever the real price is and IF you pay enough taxes to get a tax refund- you get up to $7500 back with your tax refund.
3- So really, this thing is the same prices a Maverick but tinier, less capable, and we'll see about longevity.

I heard $25k if correct holy shoot this will FAIL. Much smaller than maverick. Way more primitive. Range that stinks, ugly . I can go at least 500 miles on a tank in my Mav . If price is say 15 K them maybe. Better if hybrid . or even straight gas. EV no thanks .

The nomenclature "SLATE" is to indicate you have a blank slate to build on.

Slate is also boring, flat, hard and brittle.

Not any more. The tax credit, as it stands now, can be deducted from the purchase price at the dealer. If you make TOO MUCH money, then you have to pay that credit back. We bought an Equinox EV that way and I guess we don't make too much money (since the tax program we used told us we didn't have to pay the government back).

Interesting. Glad the add on seats face the same direction as the fronts:) I like a lot of the ideas associated with the design and build. The company would have to make this rock solid to compete. Amazed that there are functional beta versions and possible initial production by 2026 and we are most of us just hearing about.
I am retired, live comfortably, and could plug it in all day if I don't want to go anywhere. Plus you better make sure it is a 20 amp service or watch burn down. It is a novelty vehicle at best. Don't ASSume about ME!

Remember the ‘Yugo’ ?
Little shit box Russian looking puddle jumper.
Buddy bought one for $100 right after the company failed.

He couldn’t even get brake pads.

We all had a blast killing the thing. One of the guys borrowed it to teach his 13 year old daughter how to drive. She learned fast, became a lawyer.

The thing didn’t last long.
Interesting comparison, one problem with cheap vehicles is that they don't get maintained and are driven into the ground. I remember the Yugo, basicaly a Fiat built in Yugoslavia (a country that does not exist anymore!).

Good for you!

I was just fixing your math.
From the SLATE Truck website. Just fixing your fixing.
" Use the included Slate charging cable • No need to purchase extras • Adds 2 to 5 miles per hour of charge • Overnight charge adds 20 to 50 miles " 12 x 2 =24 miles. 12 x 5 = 60.
"

Let's say you have an EV with a 60-kWh battery and the local electricity rate is $0.178 per kWh.

 1. Total Energy: 60 kWh (battery size)
 2. Cost per kWh: $0.178
 3. Total Cost: 60 kWh * $0.178/kWh = $10.68
Therefore, a full charge using a 120V outlet would cost approximately $10.68, based on the J.D. Power calculation.
Okay so about ten bucks to charge fully. How far can it go on that? I think I heard 240 miles. I can go easy 500 mile on 13 gallons at $2.99 now for me so 38 bucks about. Sometimes even more. on 13 gallons. . Yet if you travel electricity rates are much much higher at those fast chargers. So up in cost to travel. So cost wise saving is there but not much . Added insurance cost plus registration in many states.

All to be crippled by its short range . They say not to regularly discharge a EV battery below 10 percent plus charge above 80 percent . My buddy has a Tesla and he says its in his manual for longest battery life.

Plus no idea on quality of components in this. Plus where to get service. These kind of vehicles are a big risk to a buyer.

 Reminds me of my Suzuki Samari - I'm intrigued.

I hope not.
I am a big fan of Suzuki Samari and Honda Element....at least 2 dozen members of this board traded in their Element or Samari to get the Maverick. The beauty of both was that they had the barebone necessities and only the needed luxaries...with good MPG.

The Samari never stopped production but simply dropped the US market for sales because of being trashed by Consumer Reports...The Samari is still sold all over the world under the name Jimny (Jimmy).
I belong to an Element and Samari Chatroom and a large number of owners of both vehicles have switched to Mavericks.

Honda Element (made in Ohio) sold as many as they wanted to make but Honda decided to halt production since it would be hard to meet Obama's mandatory 35+ mpg mandate for 2025. Element fans/owners are begging Honda to bring back the "Element"...smaller but with EV...I'd buy one tomorrow...Element was SO POPULAR because you could take out the rear seats in 5 minutes and have a covered Pickup truck...or camper. I could haul much more cargo in the Element than the 4.5' Maverick bed..especially long lumber.

I'd trade the Maverick tomorrow for a modernized Suzuki or Element....I've had a EcoBoost Maverick and the EcoBoost is not in the same league as a Suzuki Samari when you're talking about real OFF-ROAD...No contest. The Samari 4 wheel drive is a world of difference than AWD, was not as fast but could go anywhere off-road.

The SLATE with a 150 mile range and 30 minute charge time is doable for me....but a Plug-in Hybrid, and a leak- proof roof, high $28,000+, I'd trade my Maverick Hybrid tomorrow. Lack of a 4 door might be an issue to get in the back seats...but that's rare for a lot of people.

My fun car is the Porsche, but my daily bang-around driver is something like the Maverick, Element, Samari or something like the Slate.

Really like current 2022 Maverick XLT that was $24,700 but to replace it would be $41,000+/- and that has priced me out of a new one. It's just not a $40,000 truck, for me. After looking at all the videos on Slate, it is not a Maverick, but the days of a $25,000 Maverick are over and a $41,000 XLT+ $3,500 add on tariff will be the killer for a 2025 Maverick.

Why all the hate? I think we should be encouraging any effort to bring an affordable alternative vehicle to the masses. I seem to remember the Maverick was ridiculed when it first came out. Sure this may be another vaporware startup, but I appreciate any effort to get the big three to start making affordable products

Can't wait to find out that, like the Kindle, this price is for the ad-supported version.

You know it's only a matter time.
Ha!...can proceed through the intersection in 5...4...3...2...1.

I forget the name of the Rum but back In the late 80's I had a Liquor store.
This new rum was far better than Bacardi and 30% cheaper.
Bacardi promptly bought them then shut the plant down.
