I took delivery of a 2024 Maverick on Sept 20th.. The recall had been issued, but It wasn't till about 2 weeks ago FORD ordered dealers not to sell..
The Recall states - it's a software fix...

Now it involves the camera picture "Freezing" while in reverse.
My odometer last nght when I got home is 2999.5.

I have obeseved that on backing up my camera has "hesitated" like when streaming on a poor internet connection, But no internet.

I did some experimenting as I retired as Senior Field Engineer for a Global Computer Company. I was 2nd-3rd level support.

The backup camera does not hesitate when listening to AM-FM radio but if connected to a smart phone. via USB cable the computer is decoding digital streams while decoding the back up camera and there is an interupt problem...

Years ago Digital Equipment Company (DEC) solved "real time" computing by using a interupt priority scheme.. That blew IBM out of the water... As a DEC computer prioritized it's routines and if some hardware came knocking that had a higher prority, i would exit it's current routine, place where it popped it on the "stack", service the interuption , then "pop" the stack and go back to where it was. That became known as real time computing. DEC also had a NMI -Non Maskable Interupt.. which was the absolute top priority in the sysem.. Quite a cool computing scheme. if you go to the NEW Smithsonian Air and Space museum in Chantilly Virgina, there is a NASA mercury control room mock up.. and there sits a DEC PDP11/45... a 16 bit real time box, I used to work on in 1979....
Ford Maverick 2024 Maverick Backup Cam Recall 1735400662870-

Frankly what I "see" or summurize the CPU/GPU in the "entertainment center" of the maverick has little computing power.. Probably that of a free cell phone they give away if you sign up for cell service..

I have a computer that is about the size of a stick of gum, that runs faster than what i see in my Maverick.. That being a (RPI) Raspberry PI ZERO W 2, that hobbiests buy for $15 in single lot quanities and they even have a camera plug in that doesn't hesitate...

Associated Press (AP) has 2 RPI's and 2 color cameras in MEXICO CITY, MEXICO.. It looks at the volcano down there and if it detects motion (ERUPTION) it start streaming to the AP Data Center in Kansas City. I knew the guy that designed it..

So my personal opinion the CPU Ford uses is an almost antique as it's 3-5 years old in computer time. it's not that it can't handle the camera, it can't handle the camera when it's also multitasking the ford pass app, the drivers cellphone connection, engine stuff, blah,blah.. that's why it freezes, or hesitates. Why I know? when you play AM-FM radio there is less computing going on than when you are streaming itunes and decoding the digital stream to analog audio. unplug the USB to your phone, listen to the radio, or turn it off and the backup camera doesn't freeze..

The poor computing power may be why there is no 10 device wi-fi router internet connection that according to my sticker is in my car but it isn't.. One of the reasons I bought the Truck.

Not really. The publicity as you called it is contained to online discussion forums with negligible exposure to the greater buying public. I am unaware of any sizeable media coverage of it, and as I do not live under a rock that generally means that there isn't any.

The fine that Ford was hit with for the cameras is the only recent media, and the spotlight with that was characteristically brief.

The name of the game is cheap parts, and cheap solutions if they have issues post-sale. Institutional investors (Ford doesn't give two squirts about small share holders, and it's not just them) want good quarterlies, and an all to forgiving buying public tends to forgive an awful lot.
You're probably correct.

I'm in IT and completely agree with you. The APIMs in my XL AND my '23 F-150 are both total garbage. The software fix will likely change the priority of tasks it handles when the backup camera is live, so that it bothers less with all the other stuff it's trying to do. I've had the freezing on my maverick and had to hard reset both the maverick and the F-150 numerous times.

That makes perfectly good sense! In that case it seems it would be better to have a stand alone camera that is not connected to any other devices other than a rear camera alert sensor. It will be interesting to see how this plays out considering how it affects Ford's bottom line.

Hey everyone, new here and not sure if this has been asked before. Bought a new 2024 XLT on friday but dealership said I had to wait until the recall issue regarding the backup cam freezing got fixed. They had no timeline on how long it would take. Saw the recall occured in September. Anybody else experience this? Any idea how long it'll be until I get my new truck? THANKS
If you don't already have this answer... (I checked to see if someone else conveyed this info but didnt see it) the instructions from Ford to dealers is that they can't allow test drives of recalled/not yet repaired, and cannot deliver /allow them to drive off the lots by buyers. It's referred to as a stop-sale.

Dealerships are technically allowed to sell them but can't let buyers take them. Only the lowest of the low dealer/dealerships do this without first making it abundantly clear to the customer that this is the situation.

A fix is reported to be expected 1st quarter 2025 which may mean end of January or later.

It will be a software fix likely done by a dealership or Ford mobile service vehicle.

If you need your Maverick before February maybe find a used one through a non-ford dealership or get a 2025 model. My dealership has 4 available.

Can a dealership sell a new car with a recall?

Federal law does prohibit car dealers from selling new cars, trucks and SUVs with open recalls that have not been repaired. It also prohibits car rental agencies from renting unrepaired vehicles.

Putting post #1 together with #24
Makes more sense.
A conditional purchase agreement was made and a deposit was put on a particular Maverick but it was not actually sold.

Correct they took a small deposit after we negotiated on a final price. Paying full in cash once gets fixed. Was told "if a couple months go bye and you want to go in a different direction" then I'd be able to get my deposit back. Using a rental at the moment and hoping it isn't long or else I think I'm going to have to shop around for another vehicle.

Go to YouTube and find the South Main Auto Channel.

On his video where he repairs a Hyundai that won’t run or drive The host explains how the backup camera connects to virtually every system including driveability

This Hyundai is stuck in second gear and is undriveable due to a bad camera

I think this is the issue with the hold on delivering 2024’s that have the recall

Nothing is simple on modern cars

So I'm not the only one seeing freezing during non-B/U camera use.
There have been times the infotainment system was locked up so bad I couldn't even access the radio.
For those who may not know, press and hold the Power and Fast Forward buttons to force a restart of the system.

So is that something that can be fixed with a software update, or is it hardware?

This affects all non-lariats 2022-2024 which is hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Guarantee Ford will find a way to fix this with a software update but it will likely require either a dealer or mobile Ford service to install it.

Yep have gotten used to doing the hard reboot on my 24 XLT. I rarely remember these weird button sequences as you would normally only need to use them rarely - in this case I know "Power Forward", as I like to call it, by heart.

It's etched into my brain almost as deeply as CTL-ALT-DEL on Windows computers, AKA "Three Fingered Solute" 👍
