I have owned Honda's for the last 25 years. I have NEVER had an issue with any of them. Over 200K on each of them.

Having said that.... I really want a Maverick. Front wheel drive. Which engine?

From what I'm reading, the 2.0 EccoBoost has an issue with carbon build up around 100K and issues could occur. The 2.5L is a better engine, but you have to get the hybrid set up.

What engine set up will be the most reliable?

id love a NA 2.5 non hybrid like i had in my transit connect, but that aint happening, so i went with the turbo motor as I'm gonna hold out on hybrids as my last act of defiance.

*My opinion* - The 2.5L Hybrid is likely the best long term hedge for reliability. This is because of its simplicity, much fewer parts in the engine (no turbocharger and controls for it) and the eCVT transmission has far fewer parts and complexity vs the 8-speed auto to wear and fail. Also the 2.5L Hybrid features a longer warranty on several of its components related to the hybrid system of 8 years, 100,000 miles.

I wouldn’t worry about either one.

Honda aint Ford. 2021 April issue of CR ranks Honda as "higher than average" reliability score average across all their vehicles, Ford as "below average", on a rank from worst, below average, average, higher than average, to best. The first year 2020 Ford Escape on which the Maverick is based received a "worst" reliability rating for both powertrains, hybrid and turbo, but not necessarily because of the powertrain as there are a lot of little parts of a car that can have issues be it windshield wiper pumps to tire pressure sensors to door lock actuators, you name it.

Powertrain wise, I feel very confident that the 2.5H is the most reliable option, as its a low stressed port injected atkinson cycle engine assisted by a simple electric motor in a eCVT that's similar to that used in probably the most reliable vehicle ever made, the Toyota Prius hybrid.

Never the less, whether or not all the bugs have been worked out producing the sister vehicle Escapes and Bronco Sports with two years under their belt is not yet known, so an extended warranty may be worthwhile for peace of mind.

I would go to a Ford dealer and drive both an Escape 2.0 ecoboost and hybrid back to back though, as that will tell you which one feels the best to you, as that may be a deciding factor. You can read through reviews for the Escape hybrid vs ecoboost, but generally speaking the hybrid is getting a lot of praise for a good combination of responsiveness and economy with no noticeable "hybrid brake" shenanigans that feel totally normal.

If I had not wanted the AWD/FX4/4k, I would have absolutely gone with the 2.5 Hybrid. That being said, go with whichever motor will suit your needs. I can't say for certain, but I'm fairly sure they both will be reliable.

Neither, a 2.7 V6 twin turbo in a Bronco. Really we are going to start a new thread on this dead horse.

Repeat every 10,000 miles this is not a Honda or a Toyota. The Maverick should serve you well with regular maintenance and it will be a blast to drive. I wouldnt worry about the carbon build up due to sentence above. It is amazing how many people dont due regular maintnence on car due to barely scratching up enough for the monthly car payment. Average monthly car payment is almost $600 a month which is very misleading since you can push a loan out 8 years now. The Maverick will have a few more rattles vibrations and gremlins etc than a Honda at the same mileage. I have had Fords in past but switched to Honda several years ago but Ford is the only american headquarted brand I would purchase

I am hoping the Maverick will get me through until Toyota jumps in the game with a Rav4 truck. A Honda crv truck doesnt sound exciting. It is a longshot but the Maverick will be fun. Especially with the 2.0l engine

I’m going down to Mullinax Ford. I’m a bit grumpy on Thursday evenings with no emails from Ford on my Bronco and now my Maverick.

I’ve had 4 Ford hybrids, never had an issue. They outsell Honda so that right there should tell you something. Lol

I've owned 2 Hondas: (1) a 1991 Prelude, my wife loved it, only minor A/C issues at ~100k mark, and (2) our current 2017 CR-V Touring, which has been a bit of a disappointment (a lot of road noise, only 21k miles on it and already A/C compressors crapped out twice, once of course just out of warranty). Even Hondas can have problems.

Get a Maverick Hybrid, drive it for awhile, if you like it get an online Ford extended warranty to allay any engine concerns.
