1975 was my favorite year of all time. 18 young free, not a care in the world. i was not driving a Maverick but a 66 Mustang. Had my whole life ahead of me!
I second that! Early 70's high school, late 70's college ... Great Times! Class of 1975, St. Charles High School, St. Charles, MI

Sure that wasn’t a FORD, pinto?
Unaware of any overheating issues on the Pinto and the fuel tank issue was common to many different vehicles of the era. Ford deserved the bad press because they knew the issue and could have addressed it for not a large per unit cost. So, no, I haven't mix them up. It was the Vega aluminum engine that warped pretty easy on overheat. The Vega was a neat car but a fan belt breaking while on an interstate meant big problems. Hope you're real close to the next exit.

Vegas weren't terrible. They had a cast aluminum engine that really wasn't bad as long as it never overheated. Once the temps got too high it was all over; "check the gas and fill it w/ oil." If I remember correctly my dad always said the base price of the Vega when it first came out was $1,995!

That's funny $1995. I remember the first car I ever considered, and it was a Maverick. Advertised for $1995. I went in to the dealer and without tax, they wanted $2149. I thought it was such a rip off. Anyways, never said a Vega was bad, just that their overheating was a catastrophe that would likely total your car. Therefore, your temperature light was a kaput light.

And, I believe the base price on the first Mustangs was $695. I bet very few actually sold for that price.

I bought my brothers 1977 Vega GT! I bought a new engine block with the steel cylinder inserts to stop the oil burning and got a turbo charger kit from a dealership for around 200 bucks. Painted it black and rims gold to make it look like the Vega Cosworth. The turbo charger made it a world of difference. I just wished I had pictures of it!

Found this online:
The first Mustang rolled off the assembly line March 9, 1964, and it made its national debut on April 17. With a list price of $2,368, by the weekend, 22,000 cars were ordered and some 303,408 were built that first year. Through 1966, Ford sold more than 1.4 million of them.

Thanx, I stand corrected. Not sure why my dear ole dd always said $695 for a Mustang.

I was working at a shell station with a carwash that was part of the building (converted service bay) and the whole station filled with a steam cloud. We all wondered what was going on, until a Vega was coming out of the wash. It looked like an old locomotive with all the steam! I believe that Vega was Kaput!

I thought for sure you this would include info about a ‘76 Maverick. We had one of similar vintage as a second car. Learned to drive on it as well as my siblings. Older brother hit a parked car with it while in training and we spent a summer pre internet days at junk yards looking for a right front body panel. Added to the aesthetics since the car was blue (at least the parts that weren’t rusted) and the replacement was somewhat burgundy. It was a horrible car. My siblings found it odd/funny that I was interested in buying a Maverick… Thought a Pacer would be a better choice

Okay Vega guys, do you remember the Baldwin/Motion Phase III Vega that had a 454 V8 in it. I think they were twin turbochargd. I remember reading in a Hot Rod mag that you didn't actually drive it, you aimed it. 😆

Those are "Vegas not Mavericks. The Title of the thread was misleading, thought we were going to see 70's Mavericks compared with current Mavericks. Bummed!
