At this point a PHEV probably only makes sense if the vast majority of your commutes (5 days work, errands on weekend) are totally handled by the EV mode.Let’s see here, $5,000 for the plug in charger and adding the necessary sixty amp service at the house.
I’ll be generous and call it a 45% fuel savings from the plug in Maverick over the Ecoboost. To reach 45% your average would need to be at or near 50 mpg.
Annual Fuel cost in my Ecoboost. Vs annual fuel cost with the plug in. And factoring in my home electric bill rise charging from a sixty amp circuit.
‘Calculator starts to get hot, clickity click click.
I got it !
My fuel savings pay for the in home charging system in about six years.
Then after that I’ll find some savings driving the hybrid plug in, maybe, if the main battery keeps working.
No wait !
Light bulb !!!!
Brain wakes up.
I’ll need to start saving all my fuel savings for about six more years to purchase that new lithium drive battery.
Calculator starts smoking, click click click click, pause them more clicking.
So ! Over a twelve year span I saved exactly nothing.
Could have bought TWO Ecoboosters instead of TWO Plug in hybrids over that twelve years and spent relatively the same on fuel costs.
And enjoyed the vroom vroom aspect without ever having to drive slow pissing everyone off to get my needed 50 mpg numbers.
Thats what my brain does to me, that’s my insanity.
There are seven types of ADHD.
I have three, type three can only be diagnosed by a nuclear psychiatrist.
I never heard of that one before.
By the way, I asked the nuke shrink of thirty years in the profession how he knew I had type three.
He said, “Because I have it”
I see absolutely no advantage to plug in hybrids once you add that $5,000 charger and add a sixty amp circuit to your house,
Then the higher electric bill.
A sixty amp circuit pumping for several hours is far more costly than a tankless water heater, also a sixty amp system.
That will only run when your running the hot water, minutes to several for a hot shower.
So no to little fuel bought.
Only electrical usage.
Now you probably need one of those rate plans that gives a big discount for super off hours usage. Like after midnight.
Plenty of time to recharge if you really did splurge for the 60A circuit, and needed a full charge.
But you actually don't need the 60A - unless you truly do a full discharge of the battery, and need it fully charged up to push the potential range the next day - and get home late to start it.
But if actual fuel usage is low already due to low driving amounts - nope not worth it.
But the fun in EV only mode - don't discount that!
