Dealers could still provide PDI, parts, accessories and service. They would save tons of money on floor plan, advertising and, by reducing the number of liars (salesmen) on staff, salaries/benefits.
Yeah, sooner or later, somebody would probably be interested in buying it. It was very nice of the dealer to forego the deposit. He was really trying to help you out. Gotta love 'em, those car dealers.
The OP mentioned $500 as a deposit amount. At an annual interest rate of 3.30% , that amounts to $16.50 per year. Divide that by 12 months and your losing $1.38 per month in interest.

If he's buying the truck from a dealer in PA and he lives in FL, how is that dealer going to have a title or registration?
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it's my understanding that the dealer will provide the manufacturer's statement of origin, which would be used to register the truck...

I suggest that you go to the dealership and verify exactly what you are paying for. You need a buyers order signed by a manager or owner, not something the salesman verbally agreed to.
I would also be concerned about "mandatory" dealer add-ons such as nitrogen in the tires, tint, protective finishes, locking lug nuts, blinking brake lights, etc. The finance guy is likely to hit you up for all sorts of things. Also, there's the fake "doc" fee which is pure profit.
