I’ve used similar clamps on three different trucks and topper combinations in past years. Never had a topper shift or leak.
Don’t recommend drilling the bed rails as the holes introduce a potential rust area.

Is there some reason they don't build it with a gasket to seal between the topper and the back of the cab?

That's what I was wondering the first time I saw it. I live in the Northeast. I wondered if snow filled that area, partially melted, and refroze, could expansion break the cap or truck window? It just doesn't seem like the right fit at all.

Maybe the exterior cab light makes it difficult? I gave up on the idea of a shell and am going with a tonneau cover. I wish I could find a good, fully enclosed bed tent.

They make after market products that seal the cap to the cab. The Maverick is unique because of the unibody. The companies that make the caps could do a little more R&D to make these better for sure.

We don't get a lot of snow where I live but the times it did there was no accumulation in the gap. I did see ice in there at some points. Perhaps if you lived in a colder snowier climate it would become an issue.

Update!!

Some friends and I resealed the cap on my Maverick this weekend. The process was simple and didn't take too long.

The cap was heavier than I thought but with three people it was easy to remove and flip upside down. Once we had it flipped you could see the horrendous seal job that was done originally. 1/4 foam was used down the sides and then stacked near the cab of the truck to makeup the gap.

No way this would ever seal well enough to keep water out. I know the company that installed it claims these are not meant to be water proof but I think we all want them to be and with a little effort it's possible.

After removing the old seal I cleaned the cap super well and it was time to apply the new seal. After some looking and thinking we all decided to put the seal on the truck instead of the cap. I don't plan on removing the cap so if I need a new seal down the road I will just buy another one. We installed a double bubble seal that is meant for truck caps. I'll leave links below on what we used. This seal is so much better than thin foam. In the corners we needed to use a good amount of butyl to fill some gaps.

On the first water test with the garden hose it was leaking in the corners. There was seam sealer below the double bubble seal and it caused a slight gap where water could get it. We removed the cap and put more butyl. I went a little overboard as you can see in the pictures.

The second water test was a success. No leaks and the water was running down the sides of the bed and emptying out the back. We also moved the cap closer to the cab since it's unibody. No need for a gap like a frame and body truck. The cap sits higher than before but I'll take it being water proof over a better look. Overall I am super happy with the result and can't wait for some wet weather.

Thanks for this post on sealing up your topper. I am going to attempt the same seal job with my ARE MX

I ordered this on November 24th from Suburban Caps in Suffern, NY. The lead time was 4 to 6 weeks and I received the call it was ready on December 19th. I had it installed on December 23rd and it only took about 50 minutes. Fitment is great and Suburban Caps was great to work with. With the options and paint match it came out to just under 2800.00 with tax.

This is my first time owning a truck with a cap. I ordered this with the sliding windows and a grey head liner. No other options. If I did it again I would try to get one with a keyless lock for the rear window. I am hoping there's a retrofit kit available. I would also add roof rails to get some tie down points on the ceiling. I really want to put a net on the ceiling for storage.

Thank you. I'll forward your link to my dealer and see if they'll do it for me and for how much.

1/1/24 Update!

It leaks! I am having water get in from the seal on the front of the cap near the cab. It looks like they used three layers of quarter inch foam and it is not working. I'm going to contact them again and show some videos and pictures.

You can see in my photo about an inch of water collects in between the rear window and the front of the cap. I know me running a hose isn't rain but if the truck sits out in a heavy storm I bet a bunch of water would collect there. I am really hoping we can solve this issue. I want to add a bed rug but I don't want it to get soaked.

Opposite actually. I find I get better fuel mileage with the cap.
