I built a wooden gantry crane to lift and install Maverick Cap by my own.

My Maverick cap is heavy. Even with another persons help, it is hard to lift and install. after the first time install by hand, my finger and my back is so painful. No, I will not do it again. commercial metal gantry crane even light duty can not dissembled also too heavy , cost thousand dollar. I have to build my own.
it has three parts, can be installed in 15 minutes and disassembled in 10 minutes, stored in my backyard before my neighbor start to stare to me.

Here is my work, it works great. I am in Canada , we are the north, so don't ask me where to buy this cap in USA. the electric winch cost me around 100USD$, wood and other things less than 40USD$, a full afternoon work. yes , it is only strong enough for 400 lbs capacity. I was a civil engineer a long time ago.

I'm more into metal than wood. 40 years ago (eek!) I welded up a gantry crane for pulling car engines. It worked very well but had to be 10' tall to achieve enough clearance while the car was on jack stands, and was therefore a pain to assemble. Since then, I've switched to a standard shop crane similar to this one. It stores much more easily and can move (barely) while loaded (if necessary). I would probably go that route and modify it as needed for this application with a custom boom extension.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.
I am also thinking to modify a hitch mounted deer hoist, make it higher and long arm. the product is 600lbs capacity , I only need 300 lbs.

This is the type of project best undertaken when one's wife is somewhere else, or at least distracted, so that you can show results before she dismisses you as insane . . .



Years ago, needing to get half a roof's worth of shingles, I built a functional yardarm (shaft down the chimney) with my then future son in law. I had the lumber on hand; we only had to pick up pulleys. It worked, but after we had a couple of packs up, his brothers and father showed up, and with a half a dozen six-foot folks around, it was easier to just toss!

Very impressed with your engineering work … we lift heavy tombstones and pallet changers at our machining company, and use gantry cranes in a few locations … your design and execution is impressive. Great job!
