I was tired about reading about the towing limits on a hybrid Maverick so I thought I would hitch up the old boat and take her on a cruise .
My truck was ordered with the factory towing package , I am not sure it would make a difference . .
My boat is a 19 foot 3 Lowe Aluminum . She has a 90 horsepower Johnson motor and a matching Lowe trailer .
This trailer is longer than most and has a pretty light tongue hitch weight .
It also has new radial tires .
Its well balanced , but is hard to back up because its so long . Tends to jack knife even using the camera .
The total weight on the rig is just under 2000 pounds when all loaded up with fuel , gear and accessories .
Had her weighed one time when I had my Ranger when I was planning a long trip to Canada .
Now the real world tests .
I had her going mostly around 60-70 miles per hour on relatively flat lands .
Pulling out into traffic or starting out from a stop made the engine growl a little , but nothing unusual .
Even though its a CVT , it did sound like the truck was shifting . Must have strained her a bit between 30 and 60 mph .
She kept up with traffic just fine and acceleration did not seem to put strain on the truck .
She actually towed better than my 2001 Ranger with a 4.0 .
The cornering was much more predictable and stable .
Launching was a breeze and pulling the boat back out was no different than any other setup that I have had .
Just remember to get the fenders just under water so you can easily winch up the boat .
I have towed several other boats this year for friends and the last was a 17 foot Tracker behind a 2015 F-150 4 door .
Pretty much the same experience except the F-150 doesn't acknowledge the boat is even behind her .
On his truck its almost impossible to see the boat at the ramp so the camera is necessary .
The Maverick is lower and you can use either the camera or turn around .
All in all a really good feeling that the Maverick can handle my boat just fine .
My personal view is that with a decent balanced rig that you can tow more than the "allowed " weight .
My salesperson who has been with Ford 25 years thought that Ford puts towing limits at a conservative level to protect themselves from lawsuits and after towing mine , my feeling is that he is right .
I am not sure what is changing with the 2025 maverick hybrid to allow 4000 pound towing capacity , but I'd bet its not much
